Democrats have reportedly convinced a handful of Republicans to sign onto a resolution that would force a vote on the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files.

Epstein, a financier and child sex trafficker, became the center of discussion in the nation’s capital once again when the Department of Justice and FBI effectively closed their case on him. The department — led by Attorney General Pam Bondi — published a memo announcing that there was no “list” of Epstein associates and that his death in 2019 was confirmed to have been a suicide. The former point appeared to contradict Bondi’s previous claim that she had the supposed list on her desk.

That decision from President Donald Trump’s DOJ has divided his base. In response, Trump has insisted that the Epstein case isn’t a big deal and has resorted to attacking anyone giving attention to it.

Although Democratic members of Congress have been in agreement that the files related to the Epstein case should be released to the public, the Republicans have unanimously opposed it — until now. On Tuesday, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) announced that he and Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) would introduce a resolution to force a House floor vote on the release of the files. A GOP-led committee had previously voted down a similar resolution, keeping it off the floor.

“We all deserve to know what’s in the Epstein files, who’s implicated, and how deep this corruption goes,” Massie said.

The next day, New York Times correspondent Annie Karni reported that the resolution had gained some momentum on the Republican side of the aisle. According to her, at least six Republicans had signed on.

“This thing is moving,” Karni said. “There are six Republicans on board, and counting, and all Democrats are expected to sign on, which would be enough to force a floor vote on release of Epstein files.”
