After former President Donald Trump released his highly anticipated statement on abortion rights Monday morning, both the Trump and Biden 2024 campaigns wasted no time exchanging fire online.

Biden’s campaign posted a 9-second clip from Trump’s statement and wrote on X, “Trump says he supports extreme abortion bans across the country that criminalize doctors, threaten IVF, and force rape victims to give birth: ‘That’s what they will be.’”

Biden’s campaign highlighting that Trump said he ultimately supports states deciding on abortion rights, despite personally coming out for exceptions for rape and incest, elicited a quick reply from the Trump campaign.

“9-second clips out of context will not save your campaign,” wrote the Trump War Room account, adding:

Sorry that your candidate can’t do live interviews anymore, but if you think lying and misleading voters like this is a winning strategy, get ready to lose in November.

Trump’s campaign then also shared the former president’s original message, which included:

My view is now that we have abortion where everybody wanted it. From a legal standpoint, the states will determine by vote or legislation or perhaps both, and whatever they decide must be the law of the land, in this case, the law of the state.
Many states will be different. Many will have a different number of weeks, or some will have more conservative than others. And that’s what they will be at the end of the day. This is all about the will of the people. You must follow your heart or in many cases, your religion or your faith. Do what’s right for your family and do what’s right for yourself. Do what’s right for your children. Do what’s right for our country, and vote. So important to vote.

At the end of the day, it’s all about will of the people. That’s where we are right now. And that’s what we want, the will of the people.
