President Donald Trump commemorated one of his most famous social media posts of all time on Monday, marking nine years since he tasted the legendary Trump Tower taco bowl.
“This was so wonderful, 9 years ago today!” wrote Trump, attached to the famous May 2016 post, which showed Trump grinning over a taco bowl, along with the caption, “Happy #CincoDeMayo! The best taco bowls are made in Trump Tower Grill. I love Hispanics!”
Trump’s 2016 post sparked uproar at the time, including from conservatives who compared it to blackface.
“I can’t wait for President Trump’s MLK Day tweet. In blackface,” reacted Ben Shapiro, while Meghan McCain tweeted, “Totally gonna fix his problems with the hispanic vote.”
Trump went on to win the 2016 presidential election, beating former first lady and secretary of state Hillary Clinton by 74 electoral college votes.
Some social media users even promoted conspiracy theories that the $13.50 “Taco fiesta!” taco bowl was not actually available to purchase at Trump Tower – a suggestion that was quickly disproven.
On the campaign trail in 2024, Trump repeated his famous “I love Hispanics!” line during a rally in New Mexico.
“I love the Hispanics! I love Hispanics!” he said. “And they are they are hard workers. And boy, are they entrepreneurial and they are great people. And they are warm! They are warm! Sometimes they are too warm, you want to know the truth.”
