Actress Salma Hayek Mocks Trump While Presenting International Film Award: ‘There Are No S*ithole Nations’

Actress Salma Hayek took a shot at Donald Trump while announcing the Independent Spirit Awards’ best international film nominations, denouncing the president’s alleged claim that some African and Latin American nations are “shithole countries.”

“This award has never gone to a shithole nation, because there are no shithole nations,” Hayek said on Saturday night — referencing Trump’s infamous and widely debated comment in which he decried immigrants from developing countries when discussing who should be allowed to come to the US.

“Why do we want all these people from shithole countries coming here?” Trump reportedly said in early 2018. He went on to advocate for more immigrants from countries like Norway and less countries like Haiti in a proposal he refers to as “merit based immigrant.” However, despite his history of anti-immigrant rhetoric, Trump claimed this instance was not true and denied making the “shithole” remark.

Though, Senators Dick Durbin and Lindsey Graham say the president did use the word when referencing developing countries.

As for Hayek, this isn’t the first time the Mexican-American actress has gone after Trump — even calling the president’s actions “terrifying” at times. “I stay hopeful because I believe the best teacher in the world is your mistakes,” Hayek said last year — adding that she holds out hope because “maybe we will learn a lot from what is happening. I really do think things have to go a little bit south for people to come together and bounce back in a better way. This is how I see it.”
