President Donald Trump on Sunday night attacked California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, both Democrats, over the continued unrest and violence in Los Angeles stemming from protests that began last week against ICE and the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
In a pair of posts on his Truth Social app, Trump slammed the governor, using the nickname “Gavin Newscum” and Bass, whose job title he put in quotes, for what he said was their “absolutely horrible job” handling the situation in the city.
That situation escalated over the course of the weekend to include physical confrontations with police, vandalism and destruction of property, blocking of roads and highways, stand-offs with federal agents, and multiple instances of vehicle arson.
“Governor Gavin Newscum and “Mayor” Bass should apologize to the people of Los Angeles for the absolutely horrible job that they have done, and this now includes the ongoing L.A. riots,” Trump wrote in his first post. “These are not protesters, they are troublemakers and insurrectionists.”
“Remember, NO MASKS!” he added.
A few minutes later Trump appended the first post with a second one, adding the word “paid” to his characterization of the protesters and rioters as “insurrectionists.”
Meanwhile, Newsom is claiming that everything was going fine in California until Trump “got involved,” and continues to post on social media that any violence or unrest the city is experiencing was “provoked” by Trump and Washington.
U.S. Northern Command issued a statement Sunday announcing that 500 United States Marines have been put on a “prepared to deploy” status, on the possibility they will be sent into the city to protect federal property and personnel.
