Somewhere, a single tear rolls down the cheeks of Kevin Sorbo, Scott Baio, and James Woods. These aging Hollywood stars have openly supported President-elect Donald Trump but were left out of his just-announced plan to name celebrity ambassadors to help resurrect a collapsing entertainment industry.
In a social media post on Thursday afternoon, Trump announced that Jon Voight, Mel Gibson, and Sylvester Stallone were now his “Special Ambassadors to a great but very troubled place, Hollywood, California.”
No, he is not talking about the catastrophic wildfires that have brought massive devastation to Los Angeles neighborhoods like Pacific Palisades, Altadena, and Malibu, but have fortunately left Hollywood untouched thus far. He is talking about business lost to “Foreign Countries,” which he intends to bring in a way that evokes a voiceover for a trailer: “BIGGER, BETTER, AND STRONGER THAN EVER BEFORE!”
Trump posted on social media:
It is my honor to announce Jon Voight, Mel Gibson, and Sylvester Stallone, to be Special Ambassadors to a great but very troubled place, Hollywood, California. They will serve as Special Envoys to me for the purpose of bringing Hollywood, which has lost much business over the last four years to Foreign Countries, BACK—BIGGER, BETTER, AND STRONGER THAN EVER BEFORE! These three very talented people will be my eyes and ears, and I will get done what they suggest. It will again be, like The United States of America itself, The Golden Age of Hollywood!
Los Angeles is largely considered a “one industry town” because so much of the entertainment media industry is headquartered there. But as streaming platforms and short-form videos capture attention instead of traditional three-camera sitcoms, dramatic television series, and theatrical film releases, the once massive and lucrative business models have collapsed.
And now we know how Trump intends to help Los Angeles evolve — by bestowing a few aging stars with ceremonial titles.
