President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order to making English the official language of the United States.

According to a report from NBC News,  a majority of U.S. states have made English their official language,  but Trump’s order would mark the first time it has been done at the federal level.

“Naturalized citizens of the U.S. are required to take an English test in order to demonstrate an understanding of the English language, including the ability to read, write, and speak basic English,” according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Data from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that residents from across the country communicate through more than 350 languages. However, over three-quarters of Americans speak exclusively one language at home — English.

Vice President JD Vance famously advocated for English to be country’s official language while serving in the Senate. The then-Ohio senator introduced a measure called the English Language Unit Act that required the federal government to use English “in commonsense circumstances.”

“This commonsense legislation recognizes an inherent truth: English is the language of this country. That is why the overwhelming majority of the American people support this proposal,” Vance said at the time. “The English language has been a cornerstone of American culture for over 250 years. It is far past time for Congress to codify its place into law, which is exactly what this bill does.”
