Former President Donald Trump insisted that his campaign staffers consult with his youngest son Barron Trump before booking “edgy bro” podcast interviews.

Throughout the 2024 election cycle, Trump appeared on a number of popular podcasts with online influencers, including Joe Rogan, Theo Von, Logan Paul, and Adin Ross. Trump ally Dana White gave those influencers a shoutout during Trump’s victory speech early Wednesday morning.

Time journalist Eric Cortellessa wrote a report on Wednesday detailing the various factors that led the Trump campaign to victory. In late July, after Vice President Kamala Harris filled President Joe Biden’s spot at the top of the Democratic ticket, Trump campaign co-chair Susie Wiles tasked GOP consultant Alex Bruesewitz with constructing a list of online podcast personalities for interviews.

The campaign found that young men did not receive their news from mainstream media and were not concerned with Democratic backsliding as compared to other groups. Cortellessa writes, “When they did interact with politics, it was mostly through edgy bro podcasts and social media. They appreciated Trump’s brashness and habit of smashing norms.”

After receiving the request from Wiles, Bruesewitz and Danielle Alvarez, a senior Trump adviser, contacted Trump on a golf course the following morning.

Per the Time report:

“I have a list of podcasts I wanted to pitch you on,” Bruesewitz said. Trump stopped him there. “Have you talked this over with Barron?” he asked, referring to his 18-year-old son.

“No, sir,” Bruesewitz said.

“Call Barron and see what he thinks and let me know,” Trump said, and abruptly hung up. Bruesewitz reached Barron later that day and learned that he was particularly fond of Adin Ross, a provocateur mostly known for collaborating with celebrities on live-streams of video games, such as NBA2K and Grand Theft Auto. They agreed that’s where Trump should start. The podcast strategy was in motion.
