JUST IN: Michigan Supreme Court Shoots Down Attempt to Kick Trump Off the Ballot

The Michigan Supreme Court rejected an attempt to remove Donald Trump from the state’s 2024 ballot, days after the Colorado Supreme Court ruled to disqualify the former president from the ballot.

The Wednesday ruling is a rejection of efforts within the state to disqualify Trump’s 2024 run on the basis that Section 3 of the 14th Amendment bans insurrectionists from holding public office. This was the same rationale from the ruling in Colorado just over a week ago that declared Trump ineligible because of his actions leading up to the January 6th storming of the U.S. Capitol.

CNN’s Katelyn Polantz broke down the ruling by explaining that the justices in Michigan rejected the case on procedural grounds after the lower courts had already decided in Trump’s favor.

“That is essentially them saying we are not touching it,” Polantz said. “What happened so far stands, and thus, Trump is going to remain on the ballot in the state of Michigan.”

Polantz went on to note that Michigan state law is “much different than Colorado,” one being that Michigan doesn’t have qualifying laws that require candidates to be legally able to run before they can appear on the ballot. The ruling from Colorado has been the subject of considerable political debate, and Trump’s ballot ban is likely to be addressed by the Supreme Court.
