FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe is reportedly stepping down.
NBC News’ Pete Williams broke the news on-air today that McCabe moved up his timetable for stepping down and is out effective today.
As Williams explained, this is happening “sooner than anticipated.”
Andrew McCabe steps down effective today as deputy director of the FBI, multiple sources familiar with the matter tell NBC News.
McCabe will remain on the FBI payroll, on “terminal leave” until he's eligible to retire with full benefits in mid-March.— Craig Melvin (@craigmelvin) January 29, 2018
McCabe has come under scrutiny from Republicans in recent weeks, including from President Trump himself:
Problem is that the acting head of the FBI & the person in charge of the Hillary investigation, Andrew McCabe, got $700,000 from H for wife!

How can FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, the man in charge, along with leakin’ James Comey, of the Phony Hillary Clinton investigation (including her 33,000 illegally deleted emails) be given $700,000 for wife’s campaign by Clinton Puppets during investigation?

UPDATE –– 12:56 pm ET: Other news outlets are confirming this now, and there is some reporting suggesting this may not have been his decision:
Source tells @CBSNews's Pat Milton that McCabe was forced to step down. He's currently on leave and will officially retire in March.

A source familiar tells Fox News it would be accurate to say McCabe was, “Removed.” Further, I’m told this is most likely the earliest date possible for the FBI to remove him and still leave him fully eligible for his pension. #FoxNews
