CNN’s Dana Bash Grills Kellyanne Conway on Trump Saying Cohen Won’t Flip: What Is He Worried About?

Grilled this morning by CNN’s Dana Bash on why President Trump would mention his lawyer Michael Cohen “flipping” if there was nothing to hide, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway said it was simply a defense of Cohen against unfair treatment.

“He is defending someone who has worked with and known for a dozen plus years who he thinks is being treated unfairly,” Conway told Bash.

“You’ve got Jim Comey, on the one hand, going out on a big book tour after saying ‘I don’t leak, I’m not sneaky, I don’t make any weasel moves,’ and doing all of the above again and again, including in his memos,” she said. “Also, the methods really have disturbed the president. He said in the cabinet room when he first got word of the FBI raid almost two weeks ago tomorrow, that he felt the methods were a, ‘disgrace,’ and that should concern everyone.”

Conway dodged Bash’s questions on what Cohen would have to ‘flip’ on, noting that the president “thinks this is an overwrought process.”

Trump sent out a rapid-fire succession of tweets Saturday, speaking out against public suspicion of Cohen, who was raided earlier this month by the FBI, which searched his home and office, seizing numerous documents.

“Nobody’s talked about the contents of the documents,” Conway said. “People are speculating and prevaricating, particularly not under oath on TV shows. But the method should concern people. Look at the DNC server. The FBI didn’t bother to secure or search the DNC server…and here Michael Cohen is subject to a raid by the same organization.”

Asked again whether Cohen has any information he would want to keep out of the feds’ reach, Conway continued to brush off the president’s comments on his attorney as a character defense.

“He stands up for people in his inner circle and people he knows when he thinks they are being treated unfairly. He shows a great sense of loyalty to people,” she said.
