CNN’s John King Excoriates McCarthy for Capitol Commission Presser: ‘Everything You Need to Know About the Current House Republicans’
CNN anchor John King offered some scathing criticism for House Republicans after a press conference in which Kevin McCarthy said he did not believe any members of the conference had communicated with the pro-Trump rioters who stormed the Capitol on January 6.
“Do you think it is a conflict of interest for members to be voting on a commission that they might have to potentially be witnesses for and provide information on?” a reporter asked McCarthy at the presser.
“No,” McCarthy replied. “Because who knows what they’re going to do on the commission? I don’t think so.”
“Are you absolutely certain none of your members were in any communication with any of the people who stormed Capitol Hill?” the reporter followed up, as the assembled Republicans at the press conference walked away.
It’s unclear whether they were leaving the presser because of the question.
“I don’t believe they are but thank you for the question,” McCarthy said, ending the press conference. He returned seconds later to answer a question about the mask rules being enforced for lawmakers in Congress.
CNN’s John King slammed Republicans over the presser.
“Everything you need to know about the current House Republicans. The minute they start asking, reporters start asking tough and fair questions about this commission that the Republicans are trying to kill, the House Republicans start to walk away,” King said.
“Then there was a question about masks and Kevin McCarthy comes back and misrepresents the issue as well,” he continued. “There is still a mask mandate in the House because so many of the Republican members in the House refuse to get vaccinated.”
On Wednesday, the House of Representatives voted to establish a commission to investigate the Capitol riots on January 6th. The vast majority of Republicans voted against it.
