Jake Tapper Grills RNC Chair on GOP Fundraiser Who Paid Off Playboy Model: ‘What the Heck Is Going On?!’
CNN’s Jake Tapper spoke with RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel this afternoon in the midst of some big news concerning the RNC.
Elliott Broidy, deputy finance chair and top GOP donor, resigned today after a bombshell report that Trump lawyer Michael Cohen helped him negotiate a $1.6 million settlement with a former Playboy model Broidy allegedly impregnated.
Before McDaniel appeared on CNN, multiple reports said she accepted his resignation, but a somewhat bewildered Tapper brought this up along with the serious allegations against former RNC finance chair Steve Wynn to ask, “What the heck is going on at the RNC?”
McDaniel said she spoke to Broidy and touted how much money the RNC has raised, before saying she will look into the question of whether Cohen is still an RNC deputy finance chair. She did add that so far Cohen hasn’t been charged with anything.
The RNC is launching a full-scale attack on James Comey ahead of his book’s release, but as Tapper asked, “Can you understand somebody watching right now might look at anyone from the RNC today, given Broidy and Cohen and Wynn, and say, ‘On what grounds can the RNC question anyone else’s integrity?'”
McDaniel immediately talked about how the GOP “passed a massive tax cut that’s helped the middle class” and said people are primarily concerned with policy.
Tapper went back to the Cohen-Broidy issue and again asked, “How does that give you any moral ground to question anyone’s integrity?”
McDaniel responded by talking about Comey’s lack of credibility.
