Scarborough on Trump: A Lot of Americans Supported a Man Who Made ‘Overtly Bigoted, Racist Statements’
Joe Scarborough expressed real shock and surprise that so many Americans voted during the midterm elections in support of President Donald Trump’s agenda and campaign tactics.
After opening Morning Joe proclaiming that the headline for midterm results is that President Trump’s executive branch of the U.S. government will have a check and balance now that Democrats have taken control of the House of Representative he later turned to how effective Trump’s fear-mongering appeared to be.
“A lot of Americans decided to go out and vote,” he opened, adding “to support a man who spent the last month of the campaign not making subtle appeals to racism, but making overtly bigoted racist statements, attacking brown people, attacking people who were the others.”
He then took issue with what he sees as Trump’s problems with the truth, saying “And you could look at the lies. Again, this is — what was he lying about? The answer? Everything.”
“And I do sit here this morning and I do wonder how do you exactly square that in your mind that you went out specifically to support a guy that gained the praise of David Duke, that gained the praise of white nationalists that acted the way he did in the last month of the campaign?”
Mixed results of the 2018 midterm elections have left cable news pundits without a clean and clear “mandate” talking point but there is still lots to interpret. And in Scarborough’s eyes, some of the votes for Trump’s candidates and his agenda, was a vote in support of xenophobic fear-mongering.
