Joe Scarborough Stunned by ‘Remarkable’ Conservative Media Reporting on ‘Insane’ Trump Tariffs: ‘We Actually Turned on CNBC Yesterday!’
Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough marveled at conservative media’s “remarkable” critical coverage of President Donald Trump’s tariff policies that are causing a deepening market sell-off, jeering that he was so “shocked” he “actually turned on CNBC” to get the reaction.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average suffered a steep decline on Monday, plunging over a thousand points before closing down 890, as investor anxiety mounted over Trump’s refusal to dismiss the possibility of an impending recession during the weekend. Market turbulence carried into Tuesday, with the selloff intensifying as the president escalated his ongoing trade confrontation with Canada.
The volatile downturn signaled deepening concerns on Wall Street about the broader economic impact of Trump’s unpredictable rhetoric and policy maneuvers.
After opening Wednesday’s show with a clip of Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy challenging the White House’s actions, where he said had “throttled” the retirement accounts of working Americans, Scarborough profiled how conservative media was pushing back.
Co-host Mika Brzezinski read aloud a prolonged section from an editorial board article in the Rupert Murdoch-owned Wall Street Journal condemning the instability and asking: “How do you like the trade war now?”
“That’s the Wall Street Journal editorial page!” Scarborough added. “Obviously, the conservative voice, really the intellectual conservative voice and the voice of most conservatives and traders on Wall Street.”
Playing back a clip of CNBC journalist Steve Liesman slamming Trump’s “insane” economic policies, Scarborough turned to the coverage of conservative news networks, highlighting their discomfort:
We actually turned on CNBC yesterday, something that I can’t say I’ve ever done in the middle of the day. I’m not a trader, not a day trader, but yesterday, in fact, we don’t usually we don’t usually watch news during the day like, you know, we read it more but we said yesterday why let’s turn on CNBC and it was remarkable.
One of the reasons we wanted to turn on CNBC is because most people that watch CNBC voted for Donald Trump. It is a conservative network and it’s just conservative with a small C, as it pertains to business, they want to make money. That’s why they’re watching CNBC.
But we were shocked by what we heard on it. It really does parallel a lot of what the Wall Street Journal editorial page says. Bedrock conservatives, again, warning against these moves that are draining trillions of dollars from the economy.
And as Mr. Doocy said on Fox News yesterday, making people’s 401K’s go, I think he said, ‘down, down, down, down, down.’ And let me just tell you, that is something that a member of Congress hears about on the campaign trail or in his district office.
