Mayor Pete Buttigieg on Doing Away with Electoral College: ‘Absolutely, it’s Gotta Go’
South Bend, Indiana Mayor and Democratic presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg minced no words on the hot topic of the day when he said that the electoral college “absolutely” has to be abolished.
On Wednesday’s edition of MSNBC’s Morning Joe, the buzzed-about candidate sat for an extended interview that included a lightning round of sorts, during which Buttigieg expressed openness to adding Supreme Court Justices, expressed his support for a variation of Medicare for All that allows people to buy into the program, and weighed in on the electoral college in blunt fashion.
“Would you support getting rid of the electoral college?” co-host Willie Geist asked Buttigieg.
“Absolutely, it’s gotta go,” Buttigieg replied.
The electoral college became a hot topic this week when Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) came out strongly in favor of abolishing the institution at a CNN town hall, and other Democrats weighed in as well., including Beto O’Rourke.
On the other hand, Donald Trump seized on the opposite side of the argument, tweeting that “the Electoral College is far better for the U.S.A.”
