Must-See Late Night Clip: David Letterman ‘Can’t Wait’ to Retire
David Letterman 'Can't Wait' to Retire
Regis Philbin guest-hosted The Late Late Show on CBS last night and his first guests were none other than Late Show host David Letterman and musical director Paul Shaffer. In the rare interview about his coming retirement, Letterman told Philbin he “can’t wait” for the much-needed time off.
“I’ll tell you something, I can’t wait for it to happen because I am sick and tired of people saying, ‘Well, what are you going to do? What are you going to do?'” Letterman said. “I have no idea what I’m going to do.”
He said he plans to use Paul Newman as a model, someone who never planned for a post-acting career, but ended up helping people all over the world with his Newman’s Own Foundation. “I have never planned anything, but it worked out all right,” Letterman said.
When Philbin, who has had some trouble retiring himself, suggested that CBS might decide to give the Late Show host his own Sunday night show, Letterman laughed and said, “OK, I’ll wait for that call.” Instead, he joked that Shaffer has a friend that needs someone to “drive a van from Kennedy to Rhode Island once a month and I’m going to do that. ”
