Pelosi and Schumer Blast Trump’s Oval Office Address: ‘Stop Holding the American People Hostage’

Democratic leaders Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Chuck Schumer delivered their rebuttal to President Donald Trump‘s Oval Office speech, in which he declared a crisis on the southern border in order to justify his demand for a border wall.

“Sadly, much of what we heard from President Trump throughout this senseless shutdown has been full of misinformation and even malice,” Pelosi said, kicking off the very somber rebuttal. “The president has chosen fear — we want to start with the facts.”

Pelosi accused Trump of rejecting bipartisan bills to reopen the government, “over his obsession with forcing American taxpayers to waste billions of dollars on an expensive and ineffective wall — a wall he always promised Mexico would pay for.”

“The fact is we all agree we need to secure our borders while honoring our values,” Pelosi said, listing ways to further fortify the southern border.

“The fact is, the women and children at the border are not a security threat, they are a humanitarian challenge,” she continued. “And the fact is, President Trump must stop holding the American people hostage, must stop manufacturing a crisis, and must reopen the government.”

Schumer was equally unsparing of Trump, arguing the president, “just used the backdrop of the Oval Office to manufacture a crisis, stoke fear and divert from the turmoil in his administration.”

“End this shutdown now,” Schumer said.
