Sen. Blumenthal: More Convictions, Indictments to Come in Russia Probe

Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said on Monday that more convictions and indictments can be expected from Robert Mueller’s special investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia.

Appearing on Morning Joe, the Connecticut Democrat predicted that President Donald Trump will have a face-to-face interview with Mueller (to be a fly on that wall…)

“Remember that we’ve had two convictions, two indictments,” Blumenthal added. “The indictments will result in trials, and those trials will be revelatory of additional facts as well, the additional convictions and indictments that you can expect early this year from the counsel. That’s part of upholding the rule of law.”

When asked whether we can expect additional indictments, the senator laid it clearly:

“Almost certainly in my view there will be additional convictions — guilty pleas — as well as indictments.”

Blumenthal went on to criticize his Republican colleagues for what he thinks are their attempts to distract from the probe into Trump’s campaign and Russia meddling by calling for an investigation into Christopher Steele, the source of a controversial dossier on Trump’s Russia ties.

“I think it seems more designed to deflect from the investigation that we should be conducting into collusion by the Trump campaign with Russian meddling, and the obstruction of justice.”

Blumenthal also noted that he had read Donald Trump Jr.’s interview with the special counsel, and that it raises “serious, profound and pressing questions.”

Later in the interview, Blumenthal said that if Trump fired former FBI director James Comey to kill the investigation, that would be “evidence of corrupt intent which is a key element of obstruction of justice.”

He concluded by discussing recent reports that Trump sought to pressure AG Jeff Sessions from recusing himself from the investigation.

“I think all of it is building, mounting evidence,” Blumenthal said. “And there’s now a credible case of obstruction of justice.”
