Sen. Feinstein Confronts Gina Haspel Over Destruction of CIA ‘Interrogation Tapes’

Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) grilled CIA Director nominee Gina Haspel this morning over the destruction of CIA “interrogation tapes.”

Feinstein noted how the CIA has only made select parts of Haspel’s background public before asking her about her involvement in overseeing torture. Haspel noted how previous statements on her role have been corrected, specifically citing a Washington Post analysis of a Daily Beast repot on her background.

Feinstein asked her directly, “Were you an advocate for destroying the tapes?”

“I absolutely was an advocate,” Haspel responded, saying she supported the elimination of “security risk posed to our officers by those tapes.”

Feinstein asked if she was aware of what the tapes contained. Haspel said, “No, I never watched the tapes, but I understood that our officers’ faces were on them.”
