The View Criticizes SNL’s Pete Davidson Over ‘Tone-Deaf’ Joke: ‘Why Take Potshots’ Like That?
The hosts of The View this morning tackled Pete Davidson‘s SNL joke about Republican candidate Dan Crenshaw.
Crenshaw lost his eye when he was hit by an IED blast in Afghanistan in 2012. During a bit riffing on the appearances of various candidates, Davidson joked that he looks like “a hitman in a porno movie.”
Whoopi Goldberg teed up the clip by calling it a “really crappy joke,” but Joy Behar noted that SNL “doesn’t take any prisoners.”
“They took a shot at Alec Baldwin, who’s part of their family,” she argued, “so they go after a lot of people. And this kid Davidson, his father died in 9/11, and he said, ‘I like making things… out of dark, awkward, weird things that you don’t really find funny, funny. There’s nothing I won’t joke about and I think it’s because of what happened to me.’ So, I mean, he’s coming from a place of––you know, you make fun of things that are so painful to lighten the load. That’s where he’s coming from.”
Abby Huntsman criticized Davidson for the “tone deaf” joke. Meghan McCain said she had a serious problem with this, arguing that if a joke like this was made about Tammy Duckworth the reaction would be very different.
“Why take potshots at people who have served and made sacrifices?” she asked.
Sunny Hostin said the joke bothered her too, calling it a “sucker punch” and agreeing that Davidson should apologize.
Behar continued defending SNL saying, “But they do it all the time over there. Offensive humor is their stock in trade… He has a right to do it. You have a right to speak out against it.”
McCain responded, “If SNL wants to be in the game where you make fun of wounded veterans, that is a hill that you’ll die on alone.”
