The View’s Joy Behar Claims She Could Be ‘Friends’ With a Trump Supporter — But There Are Conditions
The hosts of The View launched into a debate this week weighing whether they could be “friends” with supporters of President Donald Trump, with Joy Behar declaring she could — but only to a certain point.
The talk of Trump-voting friends on The View came during a Thursday discussion on the latest episode of HBO’s The White Lotus. One of the storylines in the third season is a group of friends reuniting for a vacation, and one of them shocks her friends when it’s revealed she voted for Trump.
Alyssa Farah Griffin noted her close friend group has diverse political opinions. Sara Haines also noted she grew up around lots of conservative voices and political diversity. Behar meanwhile declared she could be friends with a Trump supporter, just not that great of friends.
“I could be friends with a Trump supporter, I won’t give them a kidney, but I could be friends with them,” Behar declared. “The thing about it is, it’s not just about politics, it’s about morality, ethics, it’s about cruelty, it’s about discrimination, and it’s about a lot of things, so those are personal human values.”
She added it would be “hard” to be friends with a Trump voter, but claimed she’d want the “discussion.”
“We’re not really just talking about fiscal conservative, who pays more taxes. We’re talking about you, as a human being, so it’s hard to be friends with someone who signs on to something like that,” Behar said. “On the other hand, they’re open to discussion. I like to talk to them and find out what exactly do you know about this guy.”
Sunny Hostin backed Behar’s kidney thinking and said it would be difficult with her to cross the political aisle and make friends with a “Trumplican.”
“We’re in abnormal times. This is not the Republican party of yesterday,” she said. It’s the Trumplican party in so many respects. So extreme. And if someone is voting for someone that is hurting members of our community, our elderly, our children, I do have a hard time being friends with that person.”
