Tosh.0 Production Assistant Shot and Killed by LA County Sheriff’s Dept
On Thursday night, officers with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department accidentally shot and killed a 30-year-old production assistant for Tosh.0 after mistaking him for the man who was holding him hostage.
John Winkler, who had recently moved to LA to pursue his dream of working in television, traveled to his neighbor’s apartment to help friends who were being held hostage by a man at knifepoint. The LA Times reports Winkler was leaving the apartment with one of the two victims when he was shot once by the LAPD, who mistook his blood-covered black shirt with the shirt worn by the alleged attacker, Alexander McDonald. They soon found McDonald inside the apartment choking a third victim, and subdued and arrested him.
The shot to Winkler was fatal and he later died from his wounds.
According to his friends and family, Winkler had just moved to LA six months ago to pursue a career in the entertainment industry, and had just accepted a job as a temporary production assistant on the Comedy Central show.
“He was quite excited the last time we talked to him,” said his aunt, Anne-Marie Van Wart. “He was just boisterous and excited, he was just getting his foot in the door of life. Just, the light was right around the corner…and [now] he’s gone.”
