Trump Blames Shutdown on Democrats Seven Times in Five Minute White House Press Spray
President Donald Trump spoke to members of the White House press corps assembled for the signing of the Criminal Justice reform bill and chose to repeat nearly every single talking point he shared via Twitter earlier in the day.
At issue is $5 Billion in funding the White House is requesting for a border wall that was so central to his run for president. A promise made, but thus far not a promise kept.
After publicly taking credit for a looming government shutdown in a very public Oval Office spat with Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), President Trump once again tried to blame the Congressional Democrats for shutting down the government.
“We need border security and the Republicans and the Senate as you know are taking it up today,” Trump said, adding “It’s really up to the Democrats.”
He then added, “Totally up to the Democrats as to whether or not we have the shutdown.”
Later he offered ” I don’t think Democrats care so much about this issue,” and “It’s up to the Democrats.”
He also said, “It’s really the Democrat shut down,” and later, “Now it’s up to the Democrats as to whether or not we have a shutdown tonight.”
The point he was trying to make, it appears, is that the government shutdown is up to the Democrats. Which stands in stark contrast to what Trump said in the Oval Office last week when he specifically said to Schumer “I will own the shutdown” and” I will not blame” the Democrats.
One more time for clarity: he is blaming what now seems like an inevitable government shut down on Democrats when JUST TEN DAYS ago he said that he would own the shutdown and not blame the Democrats. Which he is now doing.
