Donald Trump went after Ted Cruz during a campaign stop in Iowa tonight, needling him for agreeing with him on everything and making an odd remark about Cruz and Cuba.
Cruz has not attacked Trump on the campaign trail, but recently-released audio features Cruz privately criticizing Trump and Ben Carson. But rather than sticking by his words, Cruz tweeted that he won’t play the media’s game of attacking a fellow Republican rival (even though he has had zero problems attacking his other Republican rivals).
And that tweet from Cruz came after Trump tweeted up a storm attacking Cruz for trashing him behind closed doors. Mediaite’s Tommy Christopher wrote yesterday Cruz is refusing to attack Trump publicly because he’s afraid.
Well, either way, Trump went on the attack tonight anyway. Trump informed the Iowa audience that Cruz opposes ethanol because of his ties to big oil.
And not only that, but Trump even razzed Cruz a bit for refusing to attack him, saying, “Everything I say, he agrees with me. No matter what I say. I was gonna do one really wild, but he agrees.”
A little later on, as Trump bragged that he is an evangelical (sure why not), he said, “I do like Ted Cruz, but not a lot of evangelicals come out of Cuba, in all fairness. Not a lot come out. But I like him nevertheless.”
