Trump Hammers Zelensky For Wanting More U.S. Weapons to Fight Off Russia: ‘You Don’t Start a War’ With a Bigger Country

President Donald Trump criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during an Oval Office meeting on Monday, accusing him of picking a fight with Russia.

Trump also told reporters that Ukraine bears partial responsibility for the war that has devastated large portions of its territory since 2022 – and killed countless soldiers and civilians.

In an exchange with a reporter while sitting alongside El Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, Trump compared the ongoing fighting in Ukraine to “a killing field” and called it a war “that should have never been allowed to start.”

“It’s a killing field,” Trump said. “It’s like the Civil War. You take a look. I look at the satellite pictures. This should not be happening in our time. Of course, our time can be pretty violent, as we know.”

Trump added, “But that’s a war that should have never been allowed to start. And Biden could have stopped it, and Zelensky could have stopped it, and Putin should have not started it. Everybody’s to blame.”

A reporter asked Trump, “Have you spoken to President Zelensky, sir, about his offer to purchase more Patriot missile batteries?”

Trump lashed out at Zelensky and accused him of picking a fight with Russia:

He’s always looking to purchase missiles, you know. He’s against – listen, when you start a war, you gotta know that you can win the war, right? You don’t start a war against somebody that’s 20 times your size and then hope that people give you some missiles.

Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and fighting between the two countries has continued unabated since.

Trump vowed on the campaign trail to end the conflict quickly, but has so far struggled to get Russia and Ukraine to the table for peace talks.

He has continually criticized Ukraine’s defensive role in the war while mostly refraining from criticizing Moscow.
