Watch Ted Cruz Make a Painfully Obvious Larry David Joke in Debate With Bernie Sanders
You may remember during last year’s Democratic primary, comedian Larry David delivered a spot-on impersonation of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) on Saturday Night Live. Since then, we’ve actually discovered that the two men are distant relatives. And, recently, HBO brought back David’s hit show Curb Your Enthusiasm for its ninth season after a six-year hiatus.
During tonight’s CNN debate between Sanders and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) over the GOP’s tax proposal, Cruz took the opportunity during a somewhat playful moment between the two to invoke the comedian.
As Cruz was discussing the average time it takes to have a knee or hip replaced in Denmark — don’t ask — Sanders began gesticulating with his hands. The Texas lawmaker told Sanders that he didn’t interrupt him earlier, leading the Vermont senator to exclaim, “I’m not interrupting you!” Sanders added that it was just the “Italian” in him.
“You know, as some might say, curb your enthusiasm,” Cruz said to laughter and applause from the audience.
This led to some totally natural and unforced banter.
“By the way, the impression Larry David does of you is spectacular and uncanny,” Cruz told Sanders.
“Someday you may also have somebody poke fun at you,” Sanders retorted. “Got to work on it, though.”
“All I need is a bunch of left-wing comedy writers to want to glamorize me,” Cruz shot back. “Hold on, I was in the middle of making a point.”
“It’s a long point, Ted!,” Sanders shouted. “We’re running out of time here!”
