U.N. Passes Resolution Calling for an End to Israeli Settlements

The United Nations Security Council has passed a resolution calling for an end to Israeli settlements:

The United States abstained from the vote and did not exercise veto power.

There was applause in the room in the chamber when the resolution passed, which the U.N. itself tweeted about:

There was strong bipartisan resistance to this resolution in the United States, with Republican Lindsey Graham and Democrat Chuck Schumer both releasing statements strongly opposing its adoption:

President-elect Donald Trump put out a statement yesterday calling for the U.S. to veto the resolution:

The resolution being considered at the United Nations Security Council regarding Israel should be vetoed.

As the United States has long maintained, peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians will only come through direct negotiations between the parties, and not through the imposition of terms by the United Nations.

This puts Israel in a very poor negotiating position and is extremely unfair to all Israelis.
