Fraud Hunters: Memorial Day ‘Like Christmas’ For Fake War Heroes

Decorated military veterans will be marching in Memorial Day parades, and attending services in cemeteries across the country today. They’ll also be watching for bogus war heroes. “They’re going to come out of the woodwork,” Don Shipley, a former U.S. Navy SEAL, told ABC News. “This is like Christmas for a phony.”

ABC’s Vic Walter and Lee Ferran report cases of people posing as decorated vets–in some cases with their own made-up medals (pictured)–skyrocketed after the U.S. assault that killed Osama bin Laden:

“U.S. military medals are symbols of heroism, patriotism, and honor,” the FBI said in a statement to ABC News. “The FBI is proud of the men and women who have served our country dutifully. Those who impersonate veterans or wear an unearned military medal are frauds and demean what the medals are meant to honor.”

According to ABC, so far this year five people have been charged with illegally wearing service medals or claiming to be medal winners.

Ny brother in law is one…he claims he was a wounded Viet Nam sniper but I have all his paperwork that shows he served less than 2 years in Germany and begged to leave to go back to start college (which he did for 1 quarter then dropped out). He even bought his “medals” through a catalog. What a total disgrace!

For most veterans, their medals are the least of their concerns. Except for the Congressional, Silver Star, and a few others, most medals are given for normal service. I used to write the commendation letters to be sent to the pentagon. I could make a flight of pigeons look like an invading Air Force.

He has tried to take credit for the actions of SEAL Team Six. Not the same as wearing their medals, but motivated by the same reasons that others take false credit for the actions of heroes.

I I know a few of my Republican brothers that put fake medals on their uniform for extra publicity. But for pete sakes if you’re going to fake it at least wear it correctly.
