Glenn Beck Gives To “Hippie” Charities, And Other Things You’ll Learn This Weekend

We’ve heard Radio Glenn Beck, who jokes about shady Scott Brown needing to be chaperoned around D.C. We’ve seen TV Glenn Beck, who occasionally will slip in something pretty offensive about Pres. Barack Obama.

Well if you haven’t met him yet, here’s Interview Glenn Beck, who likes to shock liberals and conservatives alike – and there’s no better example than his USA Weekend profile out Sunday.

We got an early look at the cover story, which is called, “10 Things You Never Thought You’d Hear From Glenn Beck,” and will be online sometime over the next 24 hours. If you’re a frequent Mediaite reader, only three or four of these will probably be new to you. But here are some of the eye-catching comments from the interview.

Under the topic header, “He has many liberal pals,” Beck describes the longtime editor of his magazine Fusion, Liz Julis. (Oh yeah, he has a magazine too.):

Every year, I match charitable donations that my employees make. She ends up giving her money away to some hippie hemp farm somewhere, and she loves to rub it in that I’m writing a check for something like that. She’s one of my favorite people because we hardly agree on anything, but we challenge each other.”

Or how about this jaw-dropping heading? “He believes in global warming.” Here’s the whole section:

“You’d be an idiot not to notice the temperature change,” he says. He also says there’s a legit case that global warming has, at least in part, been caused by mankind. He has tried to do his part by buying a home with a “green” design and using energy-saving products. “I’m willing to do anything but use the CFLs,” he says of compact fluorescent light bulbs. “I put them in once and couldn’t stand the way they lit up the room.”

We’ve all heard about how Beck calls out both Republicans and Democrats, and that’s true and not very surprising to many. But this line stood out. A shot at, gasp, Reagan?

“Republicans sold the American people out,” Beck says. “I’ve always said I was a Reagan-style conservative. But I don’t think Reagan was a real Republican. He just maintained some shared values.”

And finally, a little bit about how great George Clooney is:

We came to an immediate, completely wholehearted agreement about the situation…He’s a good, honest man who believes passionately about doing something about it.”

Beck is notoriously private, and the article gives a glimpse at his family life, showing an image of his two youngest children in his New York City office. Whatever you feel about Beck – this interview will probably surprise you. But isn’t that what makes him great?
