Hey Mitt Romney, ‘Are You Going To Fire That Baby?’

BuzzFeed’s Zeke Miller is over in New Hampshire right now, where he overheard a fairly odd exchange take place between a heckler and presidential hopeful Mitt Romney at a campaign event in Manchester.

Romney, as any presidential candidate might, was holding a baby. And this heckler had a question about that: “Are you going to fire that baby?” Womp womp.

The question refers, of course, to a recent quote by Romney that had made the media rounds after being taken out of context. Romney had told a crowd that “I like being able to fire people who provide services to me” while making a larger point about flexibility in health care options.

And for the record: No. The baby remains in accounting. Don’t even think of borrowing a hole punch from her, though. It’s always full of tooth marks and smells like stale Cheerios and ointment. (Womp womp.)

    Cute baby.

The “fire people” story has stayed in the news cycle – his own Joe the Plumber moment. Ultimately it looks like it will hurt Romney not just because it can be used out-of-context by his rivals in both parties, but because it provides some insight into the real Mitt.

As a friend just commented, “most of the time Mitt looks like he is reading from a script – kinda robotic – but that comment seemed natural – like we saw a brief flicker of the real Mitt.”

I think that sentiment may resonate subconsciously with a number of voters notwithstanding their party politics.

In terms of what he literally meant to say, is his healthcare policy “repeal and replace” as he often says, or it is just some form of “rename and claim”?

Mediate is shameless.  Were your journOlist orders to keep bashing away at Romney.  Even the smallest incident must be reported.  Anything negative gets coverage.

Where is an article that Republican voters appear to be coalescing around Romney (per Gallup)?  Never going to see it – doesn’t fit the liberal agenda ay Mediaite.

If the baby worked for Solyndra….its already been fired by the administration….

What’s the issue with firing people?

Hey Mitt Romney, ‘Are You Going To Fire That Baby?’

Baby don’t pull his weight, he’s young, he can find new baby work.

  • Anonymous

If the baby was David Vitter or Dick Morris, he wouldn’t have to pay whores to change his diapers.

I agree. Also I think it was only half out of context. He said he enjoys firing people that provide services to him. That’s just weird. Why would anyone call it firing if they are just taking their business from one company to a better one for them? That’s not firing a person but simply switching plans. No one is fired. The way he put it sounds like he enjoys firing actual individual people providing services (as he was then talking in a broader context than just healthcare provision and referred to all services) as in say a gardener or (as he undoubtedly has) service staff in his house. That’s just creepy and weird.

Even if he was talking about corporations and switching plans, what sort of moron enjoys that? It’s a pain in the butt to fiddle around with stuff like that. He’s just not like normal people. He grew up privileged and it’s really difficult and rare when someone grows up feeling entitled that they don’t turn out a total douche. I believe he meant He enjoys it.

  • Tan

Er, did you even read the article? Obviously not! Idiot.

  • http://gregingleright.weebly.com/ Greg

“Oh this isn’t my baby, it’s a bald headed liability produced in a moment of ill timed expansion.  The markets in a thumb-sucker glut.  Were seeking buyers.  Might make a sawbuck or two.”- Romney

  • RW

How does this comment forward the discussion?  What is really creepy is that you list ‘PhD student in Social Psychology’.  Is this how we can expect you will behave in the future?  Will you use ‘idiot’ toward co-workers?  Toward clients?  Very sad.

I read the article.  It strikes me that Mediaite is just trying to hit the ‘firing’ line and get it in front of readers eyes once again.

You’re reaching a little far there, Stretch.

If someone is not doing their job they should be fired! This is a liberal attitude to think people should have jobs and they dont need to perform. This is why no one gets fired with government.
I know the left hates that word but I like Romney more if he did go into places and fire the unqualified and unproductive people.

  • Anonymous

Romney said, “It also means if you don’t like what they do, you can fire them. I
like being able to fire people who provide services to me. If someone doesn’t
give me the good service I need, I’m going to go get somebody else to provide
    that service to me.”

While I cannot speak for Mitt Romney, I think it is pretty clear he enjoys the ability/freedom to “fire” or cancel/change service providers whether that is healthcare, landscaping, dry cleaning, etc.

Obviously, as you pointed out, it is a pain in the butt to fiddle around with switching healthcare plans, but wouldn’t it be nice to have a choice to switch if the
healthcare plan you had either had terrible customer service, dramatically raised co-pays/premiums, or didn’t cover a certain medicine you needed? Maybe it would be worth the pain in order for you to get the quality of service you expect for the money you are paying. Competition in business is good. It can drive prices down and bring higher quality goods/services to the customer.

Maybe he does enjoy firing people. I don’t know. But I enjoy being able to switch/change or “fire” anyone that provides any type of service to me. Not having the ability to go somewhere else or not having any choice in the matter is when the consumer is more likely to be treated poorly.

I would fire that baby. Who wears Kangols to work?

  • david r

Maybe the baby told him to ‘take this job and stick it.’

This whole kick the media is on regarding Romney “firing” people is reaching a lot far…

Every corperate (successfull) lead in the country has had to do that at some point…

  • Anonymous

Yeah!…and they would also be sending photos of their genitals to uneraged girls too….err….wait a second

    Like you.

  • Centrist79

Newt and Perry taking Romney’s comment out of contex,t but you have to admit it was an odd statement to make in the first place.

I’m surprised he didn’t drop the manditory photo op, baby.  He’s holding her like a guy would hold a new trophy. I wonder if the day will ever come that politicians will finally learn, that using a baby as a prop, often times back fires on you.

I was following you up to the point where you say it would “be nice to have a choice to switch”.

Why don’t you have that choice now?

Everyone in the US can make the decision to buy their own health insurance right now, to take a take deduction for doing so (see IRS for rules) and to switch just as often as you please.

The insurance company on the other hand are equally able to choose not to do business with your, not to provide you access to expensive, experimental or unapproved health services, free to choose to cap your benefits per year or lifetime, to unilaterally rule that you had a pre-existing condition despite a lack of detection and drop your coverage for those treatments, and many other choices.

    Free markets, free choices!

If however you are like the 56% of Americans who get their health insurance via work then you have to hope your HR  person picks the right choices but they have many options to choose from. I’m guessing that they might choose the ones that offer the best rates since they are paying the monthly premium (unless you have a co-pay).

    Still lots of choices.

    So what’s stopping you?

Glad you brought that up, please see this link on the size of the government:
    http://thebottom99percent.com/debatewatch-perry-on-government-spending/

Now let’s see, according the BLS, the number of state, local and federal government employees was 22,577,000 Americans on the day that Barak Obama took office.

Today there are 21,972,000 or 605,000 less – where did all those people go?

Somehow, somebody lost a job in there somehow…

I agree right up to the point where you said ‘liberal agenda’ It’s pretty lazy and obviously a filler non-story but ‘liberal agenda’ implies a certain organised conspiracy element.

  • Anonymous

You are right. Everyone does have a choice, but that choice
might not be realizable. I am part of the 56% and yes, you are at their mercy as to which options you can choose from. The company I work for is small. So I have only one choice….the one they picked or no insurance.  I am lucky though, I do like the insurance.

Unfortunately for most, they don’t have the extra income to forgo the benefit provided by their employer. Also, purchasing insurance on your own isn’t very cost effective.

I am with you regarding free markets, free choices. However,
as the healthcare debate has pointed out, there are problems with the healthcare system which need to be worked out to give people more choices (purchase across state lines, bundling by small businesses).

Honestly, my comment regarding healthcare was an afterthought. The main point was that people where jumping on Romney because he used the word “fire”. If he said…if you don’t like what they do, you can choose someone else or cancel their services of the provider. Followed by, I like being able to choose the people who provide services to me.

  • http://www.viewpointnext.com ViewPoint Next

We agree, the fire comment will be taken out of context.

The real point is that Mitt wants you to buy you own insurance:

I want people to be able to own insurance if they wish to, and to buy it for themselves and perhaps keep it for the rest of their life, and to choose among different policies offered from companies across the nation. I want individuals to have their own insurance. That means the insurance company will have an incentive to keep you healthy.

That will be a very expensive option for more that 70% of American households who will find the $15,000 plus average family plan to be just too expensive to afford.

You won’t get an argument from me regarding the absurdity of the media paying attention to this sound byte.  However, Solyndra has nothing to do with this article.
