Mediaite’s Tommy Christopher And Bill Press Discuss Jay Carney’s First Month

Bill Press is a left-of-center radio host who is also a member of the White House Press Corps. Tommy Christopher is the White House correspondent for Mediaite, and readers familiar with his columns know that he is not afraid to admit his liberal tilt as well. Press had Christopher on as guest this morning to talk about the news of the week, particularly Donald Trump’s odd boast that he’d screwed Gaddafi over a land deal of some sort, but perhaps a more interesting bit was their candid appraisal of the new White House Press Secretary Jay Carney.

Tommy Christopher is the White House correspondent for Mediaite

Honest question here…not a gotcha question, but what function as White House correspondent does Tommy fulfill? Besides occasionally seeing a handful of fluff pieces on Obama’s spokespersons; a piece about junk left on a ceiling beam and a couple of birther questions, I don’t recall reading much if any news from actual White House briefings.
Aren’t the media people who are fortunate enough to be granted credentials to be in that room supposed to be there to ask relevant questions and report the days briefing news?
It’s a hell of an opportunity to burnish journalistic credentials being in that room. Sure the title sounds nice, but unless you’re running for president, you need to have a body of work and a track record. I would think that someone who had that opportunity would write as many newsworthy press briefing stories as possible and leave the MSNBC recaps to the other bloggers.

OxyCon: good point. Mediaite admits he’s liberal and yet he’s the White House correspondent? Shouldn’t the WH correspondent be objective? Isn’t it a reporter’s job to be a watchdog for the people against those in power?

(I couldn’t listen to more than 10 seconds or so. Too many “uhh, uh, you know…uhs.” Annoying as hell to listen to. Tommy’s not the smoothest or most articulate speaker, that’s for sure.) He’s no Christopher Hitchens, an erudite man who is not only a pleasure to read, but a pleasure to listen to, and who has been to every hot spot in the world–in other words, a real correspondent.

I agree with you about Jake Tapper; he’s no shill. Tommy is.

Though ya gotta love Tommy’s cute Pekingnese-dog face. He looks like one of the characters in the old “Little Rascals” series. Hey, Tommy, say ‘hi’ to Alfalfa and the gang.
