Michele Bachmann: God Is Trying To Get Politicians’ Attention Via Natural Disasters

video

Michele Bachmann was campaigning in Florida this weekend and got some attention while speaking to a roomful of her supporters when she openly suggested that the recent spate of natural disasters (Hurricane Irene and the Virgina earthquake from last week) were God’s way of trying to get politicians’ attention. She later revealed that her comment was meant to be a joke, though some are already pointing out the risky move of “attributing political motive to natural disasters.”

Writing for the St. Petersburg Times, Adam C. Smith reports:

“I don’t know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians. We’ve had an earthquake; we’ve had a hurricane. He said, ‘Are you going to start listening to me here?’ Listen to the American people because the American people are roaring right now. They know government is on a morbid obesity diet and we’ve got to rein in the spending.”

The crowd laughed at her comment, assuming it was a joking way to say God’s waking up politicians.  I’m with Herman Cain, America needs to learn how to take a joke.

How dour are people to not get that it was a bad joke?

    Hilarious joke.

I’m sure the people who died are laughing too.

How about a story on Keith Ellison , following up the NYT trying to diminish the Rep . candiates beliefs ?

PrintEmailShare:Posted on August 27, 2011 by Scott Johnson in 2012 election, Who is Keith EllisonFaith questions for Keith EllisonStanley Kurtz observes that “[o]utgoing New York Times editor Bill Keller has kicked up a controversy by placing on the table a series of religious questions for the Republican candidates for president.” I want to get in on the act and pose a set of questions for Minnesota Fifth District Rep. Keith Ellison, America’s first Muslim congressman.I summarized my research on Ellison just before he was elected to Congress in 2006 in the Weekly Standard article “Louis Farrakhan’s first congressman.” I included PDF copies of several of the documents on which the article was based in the companion Power Line post “Keith Ellison for dummies.” More recently, Middle East Quarterly editor Denis MacEoin reviewed the record in detail in “Keith Ellison’s stealth jihad.”Ellison’s public career raises basic questions that haven’t been asked by the media or answered by Ellison. Here are a few that come to mind:1. You say you converted to Islam as a college student in Detroit, yet your first published articles as a law student at the University of Minnesota were written under the pseudonym “Keith Hakim” from the perspective of a follower of Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam. When did you convert to Islam? At what mosque did you worship?2. After you graduated from law school, you became well known around Minneapolis as a local leader of the Nation of Islam. Were you a Muslim at that time?3. When you first ran for public office in 1998, the Insight News published an interview with you. You were running under the name “Keith Ellison-Muhammad” and identified yourself to the Insight News as a member of the Nation of Islam. Were you also a Muslim at that time? When after 1998 did you abandon the Nation of Islam?4. When you were a member of the Nation of Islam, did you believe that Yakub was a black scientist who lived “6,600 years ago” and was responsible for creating the white race to be a “race of devils”?5. Have you joined a mosque in Minneapolis? When did you join it?6. Do you believe that Islamic law should be the law of the land in the United States? Do you think Islam should be subordinate to the constitutional separation between church and state?7. You are a liberal Democrat who advocates the Democratic Party’s positions on gay rights, abortion, and feminism. Which branch of Islam comports with your position on these issues?

Sadly, the new political reality is that most of the folks that are making political noise have literally zero sense of humor about anything, and particularly about politics. As a nation, we have let go our ability to laugh in exchange for the desire to be constantly outraged.

Folks, this as a bad attempt at a bad joke, and one that has been told in some form by every comedian, politician, public speaker and pundit since the Virginia/DC earthquake.

    Examples:
The earthquake was caused by the Founding Fathers rolling over in their graves all at once.

The earthquake and hurricane went to DC because they have been very evil up there.

Generally bad jokes, but genuinely common right now. Give the lady a break. She tried to make a joke, it fell flat and she kind of made fun of that, too.

  • James Orleans

When will sanctamonious Bachmann supporters realize she is unelectable, and support Ron Paul.

  • http://twitter.com/BusyDay2day Father Time

I happily report that Michelle Bachmann is her own most daunting opponent.  The more exposed she is on television and in the news, the more you hear of these “bloopers”.  The Rs need to recognize that and put forward and cover their real electable candidates.

“some are already pointing out the risky move of “attributing political motive to natural disasters.”
Gee, I didn’t notice this admonition regarding Al Gore’s statements about Hurricane Irene, global warming (otherwise known as “climate change,” ever since the blizzards of the last few years), and climate skeptics being today’s “racists.” Wonder why?

  • Anonymous

Beautiful Michele Bachmann is a flamboyant feminist freedom-fighter whose sincere moral & religious beliefs only add to her seductive allure.

  • Anonymous

Also, Colby, isn’t the use of “some” followed by “are already pointing out…” the refuge of a “journalist” who is pushing an agenda by not “sourcing” the comment?

Thanks for fixing that. It was hard to read.

Looks to me like the Times is on their annual religion bashing fling.

well, it’s not like SHE was playing God, like The One did when he was running for President and HE said this:

“This was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal”

Oh well, I don’t recall any outrage on this baord when HE said that!

Hey, I think she’s a total whack-job, but the “dangers of attributing political motives to natural disasters” thing doesn’t wash here – it’s probably more of a case of her having a Joe Biden moment, and she ad libs as bad as Obama.   Please stop over analyzing a real bad ad lib…and nothing else

Her comments are not out of line or unusual for anyone of religous faith. Muslims believe Allah guides world events to his will, Christians think God does as well. All religions do.

Seriously, if all you want to do as journalists is “beat her up” you don’t need the religion thing, there are plenty of other things you can fault her for, making fun of her for having Christian beliefs won’t sit well with Christian Democrats of which there are still quite a few I’m sure.

A lot of people are brushing this off as a bad joke. I do tend to think she was mostly joking, but it was a BAD joke. Additionally, often times people try to inject a bit of what they believe to be the truth when they jest. In my opinion, and this is just my opinion, she was mostly joking but deep down does agree with the sentiment of the joke.
Any rational person recognizes that there is a clear difference between what a comedian can say as part of their job, and what a politician can say. That’s why the saying is “politically correct” not “comically correct.” With that said, even comedians run into situations where it is unacceptable to make a joke due to the nature of the joke and timing. Recent natural disasters resulting in loss of life and property are typically a no-no. Gilbert Gotfried is a comedian and he found this out the hard way when he lost his job. Bachmann is a politician and jokes like this will keep her from getting the job at The White House.
Lastly, I want to address the people acting as if no one has the right to be offended. There are lives lost and property destroyed because of this hurricane, so if people hear what Bachmann said and take offense that is natural. There’s a group of people out there that think that society’s problem is that it is too PC. Most of them just want to say whatever rude comment pops into their head, without having to suffer the consequences for such rudeness. When people call them out on it they act as if they have more justification to be offended, that you find their comment to be rude/ignorant/insensitive, than you do for the offensive comments they made. To anyone that thinks society is too PC, I can tell you society’s problem isn’t that we have too much respect for one another.

If she was joking, then it’s a non-story. This is nothing new, BTW. Many folks(particularly conservatives) have often remarked that God is sending the environmentalist loonies a message when one of their global warming summits or protests is bombarded with freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall.

Michele Bachmann has repeatedly demonstrated a grasp of science inferior to that of the average second grader.  If she thinks tectonic plates have nothing to do with earthquakes and CO2 emissions nothing to with global warming and extreme weather it would be entertaining to ask her how elevators work, where milk comes from, and the genesis of babies. Presumably, in her view, God, like an incompetent executive,  has to micromanage it all.

I’m a Christian, and her comments are out of line to me. I feel there are a lot of people that get turned off from religion because of the squeaky wheels, like Bachmann, who get the most noise and are assumed to be the norm, if not the leaders, of our religion. There are many religious people who are quiet, and humble, in how they do things. They speak more through their actions, silently setting an example.
The problem I have with Bachmann’s comments is the same one I’ve encountered with some preachers. They put forth their personal opinion or agenda as that of God. I think too many Christians use fear tactics, and it creates an antagonistic relationship with the very people you wish to convert. When I think of Jesus I think of someone whose purpose in life was salvation, not damnation. I guess you could say it’s a glass half empty/half full argument, but to me he was the type to lure flies with honey. If he wanted to scare people into coercion through fear of damnation he could have just visited the worst of horrors upon them, including those that came for his life, and made people worship him through fear.

Interesting post. I don’t think he failed to cite the source there to push an agenda. In fact, I just looked and there’s a link to a politico story under those words, so it would appear he is citing someone. Maybe he did it after your post. Back to my point, as it is not exclusive to the questionable offense you mention. I think the current journalistic atmosphere is one in which a journalist might not feel compelled to cite a source for something so irrelevant. After all, there have been people pointing that out. Is it really necessary to link a source on something so petty as that? I would say yes. I think with the changing format of media, and yes a bit of laziness, standards are starting to slack. Journalist don’t need to be cutting corners. I’m not saying that was done here. I’m just making a general observation after reading your post.

You’re going to claim the “double standard” on this? If The POTUS or the VP had said that people from the right would be lighting up these boards with the same “never let a disaster go to waste” line. They’ve done it in the past. To me it is a lot more legitimate to allege that an atmosphere and promotion of violent rhetoric and dehumanizing of opponents can be the push an unstable mind needs to recklessly cut down lives, especially when the victim complained based on those very concerns, than it is to allege that God is striking out to teach your political opponents a lesson.
Besides, looking at your post, it would seem your issue should be with sexism, though I don’t think that’s what’s going on either.

I guess the same old talking points no longer work as they did in Iowa. So why not steel Glenn Beck’s  theory. I’m sure that Bachmann also believes this message has been coming from God for thousands of years. The only problem with that is this country nor its politicians existed before then and Moses partying the Red Sea was also a message to politicians to be analyzed thousands of years later. You have to feel for intelligent conservative women when you here this wind bag and Sarah Palin at the forefront of the conservative women’s movement.

Yes he did, and acknowledged his error for saying it. That’s the thing Texan, most people will blurt out something in their lifetime that they look back on and realize was offensive. The president said something undoubtedly stupid for someone in his position. He failed to uphold a standard expected of his position when he said that. He also acknowledged that his comment was insensitive. It would be nice if more people did that instead of trying to deflect with examples of another’s behavior and silly comments about how PC society has become.

A joke about people being killed because poiliticians are bad is not funny- except to airheads who are submissive to their gay husbands.

Yeah, they just found two more hilarious dead bodies in Vermont today.

  • Brightman

Speaking of babies, you are against abortion then?

  • Anonymous

Thank God Bachmann knows what God thinks and feels….

  • Brightman

     Of course not.

  • http://www.darklady.com/ Darklady

Abortion has nothing to do with infants dying in a hurricane and a religious extremist cracking jokes about god trying to send politicians a message. Way to stay classy.

  • http://www.darklady.com/ Darklady

I think they backed off because they knew it would get them heat… but only after they’d sent out the message to those who agree with them.

  • Cygnusx3

    Oh, yeah, very funny.

  • fyonalon

The GOP has turned into a joke.  It used to be a serious party with candidates that you could admire even if you didn’t agree with them.  Now, admirable is defined as believing in God but not evolution.  If the policies got any simpler we’d be in single cell organism territory – no taxes ever!  If you want to blame someone try the Australian whose TV channel let the dogs out.  It’s porn what he has been doing to US for the last 10 years.

  • Larry Linn

Bachmann is a joke, a bad joke!

  • Sharpo

The only people who care about the 50′s and 60′s are conservatives with their head up their own butt.

why do you have a vagina?

  • Anonymous

    You can’t hide crazy.

  • expatpatriot

Actually, I think the point is that since there is no god, either blaming or praising “him” for natural events is flat-out crazy.

From a different point of view, if there were a god, either blaming or praising Him for natural events is flat-out crazy.

Whichever way you look at it, it’s nutso time.

  • labman57

That which Michele does not comprehend, she attributes to “the mighty hand of the Lord” … which explains why, in Bachmann’s world, God is intervening in just about everything.

Next time, perhaps Michele will opt to “phone a friend” before stating one of her irrational observations.

  • Anonymous

Hey! Michele, if you wanna be a preacher, be a preacher and get out of politics!

  • Anonymous

So that is what you call kinky, huh?

  • Hagen619dj

God told Noah to build an ark because there was going to be a great flood.  He and his family and groups of two of the animals would be the only ones saved.  Do you understand why the flood was used to destroy the world?  Because of Sodom and Gamorrah.  God was so ashamed of his people playing around with homosexuality, alcohol and blasphemy that he decided to start over.  Therefore, when there is a natural disaster…..who is to say it isn’t the work of God. After all, he created this world. He giveth and He will takth away. He did however, promise that there would never be another worldly flood and uses his rainbows as a steady reminder.  Rainbows are his promise of never flooding the world again.

  • Hagen619dj

Who is to say if he is right or not.  Everyone is entitled to their opinion.  No body is forcing you to believe in or about anything.

  • Hagen619dj

I rather feel sorry for you darklady. Your handle tells just how you feel about life. It isn’t going to matter what anyone says….in your mind it’s all a bunch of nonsense.  You’ve made your point.  I’ll pray for you but that’s not saying God will specficially help just you.

  • Hagen619dj

Why do you think people should laugh about that?  they have families, children, or maybe grandchildren. You just want to take words out of context.  No one is saying you have to believe in anything. Why do you get so upset?

  • Hagen619dj

and NO, Islamic law should not be the law of the US. No religion has more radicals that Muslim. Granted all people of different religions have pulled disgusting things on people and this country. But to allow muslims to take over this country is not in the books.

  • Hagen619dj

Go ahead.  Jump in there and ask instead of waiting for someone to do it for you.

  • Hagen619dj

Ask away.  don’t be afraid to ask what is one your mind. Just don’t attack people on this commentery with your questions.  If you really want the answer go to the person you have in mind and ask away.

  • Hagen619dj

Christians will not support Ron Paul.  he believes in evolution and abortions.

  • Hagen619dj

That implying pictures is really uncalled for.  And then to verse the pix towards putting a penis in her mouth. Morals and values are a thing of the past.  You see, if you believe in God, those kinds of things are not necessary to make fun of.  Gays are the ones who put things in their mouths like that. They seem to think that pushing something into the anus is sexually arousing and same with putting one in your mouth. that is the only reason that Mediaite keeps showing that pix.  They are making fun of her but a gay person sticking a penis in his mouth isn’t funny.  Yuk!  See what’s happening to this country.???

  • Hagen619dj

what a degrading thing to say. And to say it about anyone’s mother. So sad.

  • Hagen619dj

    Are you voluntering?

  • Hagen619dj

big words from a small person

  • Hagen619dj

As said before:  Read the Bible and learn to understand what is in it. You are capable of drawing your own conclusions. Natural disasters are an act of God. There is no other way to put it.  We can’t make natural disasters happen ourselves.  That’s basically the reason people state disasters as such.    It’s simple…really don’t take a genus to figure it out.

  • http://www.darklady.com/ Darklady

It’s called sarcasm. I’ll make sure to put it in html code next time.

  • http://www.darklady.com/ Darklady

Knock yourself out praying for me if it makes you feel better. You’ve made a few assumptions about me based on my handle and, guess what? They’re all wrong.

  • expatpatriot

    It’s a very close race.

  • expatpatriot

To science-deniers, perhaps not. To sentient people, they’re pretty damning.

And far from new. The wingnutariat has been on an anti-science crusade since before the Scopes Trial.

  • expatpatriot

If she was joking, then she has the judgement of a sea cucumber. Billions of dollars in damage, 25 or more deaths, and she jokes about a message from God on the topic of ”small government?”

Not for the first time, she has proved her unfitness for any public office.

  • expatpatriot

“No other way to put it” . . . how about “natural disasters are natural disasters”?

You seem to think that your (and Bachmann’s) wacky view of causation is absolute fact (dare I say “holy writ”?), and wonder why people shake their heads and call you crazy.

  • expatpatriot

Yes, anyone who speaks in public several times a day, day after day, is going to get themselves in the rhetorical doghouse from time to time.

But Bachmann does this constantly, and it always seems to be some creepy religious thing (or occasionally a historical non sequitur). And she will not apologize.

I take this as a huge character flaw, and one I don’t want in a leader.

That’s even before you get to her postions on issues, where, IMO, just about everything she says is wrong.

  • expatpatriot

Perhaps because he was talking about what *people* could do to improve the world around them, not joking about some manic-depressive sky-guy drowning people so public employees would “pay attention.”

Somehow, the two seem different to me.

  • Anonymous

She’s a smart lady, but I have no desire for another round with an inexperienced leader.  But, this is a joke, and it says nothing except she’s using humor to make a point.   If you’re looking for a president who supports gay marriage, yes, she’s not your choice.  At least she’s honest about ti.

  • Anonymous

actually, joking about a teenage girl’s sexuality by a middle aged man is just creepy.  No matter the politics.   Anyone who makes any jokes will offend someone somewhere. I’d rather live in a world of humor than one where every mild joke is questioned.

  • Anonymous

christians do believe in God’s will and a relationship with God defining their lives.  Nothing wrong with that.  Joking about it is good too.

  • Anonymous

sarcasm about people dying.  now that may be crossing the line….

  • Anonymous

Actually, Irene was small potatoes compared to Katrina in terms of harm done.

Between Obama and all the leading Republicans, Obama looks better.

But in terms of tasteless and stupid remarks, it does seem that it is the Democratic posters win the prize for stupid and offensive comments.

A pity what has haapened to a once great party.   (I mean the Democratic party).

  • Anonymous

I don’t buy this at all.   Bachmann was joking but you seem to be serious.  It seems that Vermont is harmed more than New York City or San Francisco.  Is Vermont more sinful than NYC and SF?    Doesn’t make sense.   Or is it that God has bad aim and missed the more sinful cities?

You are just as bad – from the other side – as all the nasty Democrats posting here.

It seems possible, perhaps even likely, that these hurricanes we see more and more of, are the result of global warming.   And Republicans are making a big mistake to pooh pooh the idea.

  • Anonymous

She may be ignorant, but I am afraid it is YOU who are imbued with hatred.

  • Anonymous

If you were calling my comment about Bachmann’s gay husband tasteless I guess you haven’t seen him or heard him talk- or realize he lies about his degree- he signs his name with Ph.D. after it- the correspondence school that gave him the degree only gives Psy.D.’s

  • http://twitter.com/servar33 Sergey V

I’m still shocked that she said that. I know she is a strong believer in God but its more than just vanity floor mats when you think you know what God is trying to see (and I don’t believe it was really in jest).

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BWSEBXADJWD3NKCEGEAWMTKEUY Charles Mitchell

God had something to say about this: Matthew 5:45 NIV says, “He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.”

In other words, God doesn’t order up bad weather to punish certain populations while exempting others.

So, God talks about the weather, but apparently He has thrown up His hands and decided not even He should do anything about it.
