Obama: Obamacare Enrollees ‘Might End Up Having to Switch Doctors’

President Barack Obama’s promise, that Americans could keep their health insurance plans if they liked them, was dubbed 2013’s “lie of the year” by Politifact when it was shown that this was not the case. On Friday, the president admitted that another key plank of his health care reform pitch, that Americans could keep their preferred doctor, is also not turning out to be entirely accurate.

In an exclusive interview with WebMD, Obama confessed that the Affordable Care Act may force enrollees to change doctors due to narrower networks.

“For the average person, many folks who don’t have health insurance initially, they’re going to have to make some choices,” Obama said. “And they might end up having to switch doctors, in part because they’re saving money.”

Obama said that the same would be true for those who are covered under employer-provided insurance plans. “What they’ll find, I think, is that their doctor, or network, or hospital that’s conveniently located is probably in one of those networks,” Obama said. “Now, you might find out that that network’s more expensive than another network.”
