Rahm Emanuel’s White House Goodbye Present: Dead Fish
Former White House Chief of Staff (and soon-to-be Chicago mayoral candidate) Rahm Emanuel learned the hard way that a reputation for being the “dead fish guy” at work is not easy to shake off. During one of his final senior staff meetings at the White House, his colleagues presented him with a dead Asian carp as a going away present as “something to show how we feel about you.”
Economic adviser Austan Goolsbee did the honors, and, according to CNN, he played up the elusive nature of the carp in light of Emanuel’s new venture for the top spot in Chicago:
White House Spokesman Robert Gibbs said Goolsbee recounted how he had “talked to the policy team and we wanted to give you a going away present – something to show how we feel about you but also shows we understand your new possibilities… to most people, it looks like a dead fish. But to a future mayor of Chicago, it looks like a dead Asian carp. And you’ll be happy to know that it wasn’t easy to find one of these.”
Emanuel took the warm, slightly smelly gesture in stride, according to reports. Meanwhile, Jake Tapper over at ABC News’ Political Punch produced photographic evidence of the carp, as seen below:
