Rick Sanchez Regrets Calling Obama “The Cotton-Picking President”

video

Oops! During a discussion with CNN cohort Jessica Yellin regarding recent controversies surrounding President Obama and his religious faith, Rick Sanchez used an old fashioned (and some might add racist) phrase that he immediately regretted, exasperating “he’s the cotton picking President!” Shortly after he made that comment CNN went to commercial, and immediately upon coming back from the break Sanchez offered a thoughtful apology and clarification regarding his very poor choice of words.

According to Phrase Finder, “the term ‘cotton-picking’ originated in the southern states of the USA, where it is usually pronounced cotton-pickin’” Newsweek Senior Editor Julia Reed came under criticism for making a similar comment while guesting on CNN’s AC 360 when she said that President Obama was “out of his cotton picking mind.”

    Oops is an understatement.

Poor Rick. Not ready for prime time (and his rehab via Mediaite was going so well…).

  • writer

It’s okay. Rick is on the left.

  • http://gordonbloyershow.com gordonbloyershow

This is the one time he has nothing to apologize for. That phrase is used all the time and has no reference to race. Way tooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo sensitive.

  • TfT

It’s ok, no one heard it; and if mediaite hadn’t reported about it, no one would have known.

    Oh well….

  • juan

    LoL

Who is Rick and what is CNN?

  • murf

Look at the bright side Rick , at least you didn’t kill anyone this time.

When I was a little bitty baby
My mama would rock me in the cradle,
    In them old cotton fields back home;

    It was down in Louisiana,
Just about a mile from Texarkana,
In them old cotton fields back home.

Oh, when them cotton bolls get rotten
You can’t pick very much cotton,
In them old cotton fields back home.

Imagine if Glenn Beck said it! Rick Sanchez would denounce him as a racist from the tops of mountains.

Here, here. It’s basically the same of gosh darn. The history of the phrase isn’t too hard to figure out just by hearing it, but still, I think he’s just covering his ass to be safe.

Having been accused myself of being a racist by LOTS of white, male, obamacrats with political agendas; and for a much, much lesser ‘racist crime’–namely supporting Hillary Clinton–I say that this racial slur clearly indicates that Rick Sanchez has to be the biggest, fattest, most redneck, ignorant, worthless, lynching, kkk-belonging RACCCCCISSST of all time.

Pigs like Rick keep people down. Fricking racist, bigoted pig wants to take us back to slavery! What a GD monster!!!

  • writer

I do think that when Rick put on black face and sang ‘Old Man River’, that was taking it too far.

If the thought of watching didn’t induce vomiting I might actually join the 2,427 other viewers nationally and watch Countdown with Keith Olbermann tonight. Good chance Mr. Sanchez makes the Worse-Worser-Worsest list tonight, eh?

If a tree falls in a forest and there is no one there to hear it,
    oh, never mind !
As much as I can’t stand Rick Sanchez, I mean com’on! Is this crap
not going to far? I mean, Really !!!!!

  • Big Eddie

Rick . Sit back . Have some shortnin’ bread and a pineapple shake and chill .

I’m looking forward to watching Beck today; I hope he shows the FLAT OUT LIE of a question Bowing Brian asked King Obama last night about Beck’s rally.

BRIAN WILLIAMS CAUGHT IN A BIG FAT LIE.

There is a good headline for mediaite staff — will ANYONE report it on this board? Huh?

BRIAN WILLIAMS CAUGHT IN A BIG FAT LIE

BRIAN WILLIAMS CARRIES HIS WATER AGAIN
BOWING BRIAN COW-TOWS TO THE ONE
    NBC CAUGHT PROPAGANDIZING AGAIN

Any one of those headlines would work mediaite staff….how about it?

How about exposing Bowing Brian’s lie last night?

Come on, you can do it.

Oh man! I just snorted my mojito out of my nose when I heard that! (Oh my, was that a racist thing to say?)

  • Haimerej

    I didn’t even read this.

But the idea cracks me up. This is like the Tiger Woods and the announcer thing, when the dude said they’d have to “lynch” him if they wanted to win. Just a phrase.

These people today are way too sensitive.

  • Big_F-ing_Deal

Obviously if someone innocently said that and then immediately regretted it then it becomes a non-issue. I would say the same thing no matter who said it.
On the other hand, if someone intentionally used it in a sly way, and then claimed innocence or satire or “tweaking the media” as Rush Limbaugh often does, then it would be a different matter and I would condemn it.

  • Big_F-ing_Deal

But yeah, Sanchez is an idiot across the board.

  • http://gordonbloyershow.com gordonbloyershow

BFD, you are an idiot. Here is some more news that you will say is a lie. LOL

GOP Takes Unprecedented 10-Point Lead on Generic Ballot
Republicans also maintain wide gap in enthusiasm about voting
    by Frank Newport
PRINCETON, NJ — Republicans lead by 51% to 41% among registered voters in Gallup weekly tracking of 2010 congressional voting preferences. The 10-percentage-point lead is the GOP’s largest so far this year and is its largest in Gallup’s history of tracking the midterm generic ballot for Congress.

    HOW TRUE! – THE HYPOCRITES!!

Look how Tawana Sharpton & the Democratic Media railroaded Imus for his remark!

When are the RACE-HUSTLERS & Their Media going to be calling for Rick Sanchez’s removal??

Fight the Race-Hustling Charlatans who have the NERVE to call themselves “Reverends” – Do Sharpton & Wright represent any “Reverends” you know!

  • lonestar77

Luckily for Rick, he’s a lefty. But, he shouldn’t apologize. This apologizing bull shit has been over the top for forever. It’s amazing how the left sees “racism” in every benign statement. It’s almost as if they have stereotyped blacks in their mind and when one of their catch phrases hits, boom, “racism”. Completely effing stupid.

  • Some_Dude

Classy to apologize right away, I guess. If I was watching the show I probably wouldn’t have even noticed he said it (the term has been used in everything from childrens cartoons to movies for I don’t know how long, and I don’t think many people consider it a racist term). Hell I find “rule of thumb” more insulting.

Like hell you would. If Beck or anyone other than a lib said that you’d roast ‘em and smoke ‘em to death you lyin’ sack. And you know it.

  • TfT

Let’s see what the Rev Al has to say about this; despite apologies for verbal gaffes by conservatives (IMUS, for instance) the Rev Al refused to accept his apology and damned IMUS to hell and demanded he be fired.

Will the good Rev be so tough on Rick???

    (snicker)

Rick is a lefty, therefore he gets a pass. He is also on CNN, and as I said above, no one was watching anyway.

That was the same as if some white person was addressing a random Hispanic and was like “Hey look at Jose over their” or “Speedy Gonzales”. We know why he said Macacca, and we know the intent behind it. Fucker got caught on tape and rightfully lost the election.

Perhaps one day Sanchez will apologize to the family of Jeffrey Smuzinick for killing him.
    That apology is long overdue.

We’ve become sensitized to the point of inanity.

Yeah you are right there is nothing racist about the expression… well the expression most likely was created by a conservative.

  • Rescuedog

Maybe CNN will send him to the outer banks to cover Hurricane Earl from the inside of a rubber raft. He can give us Twitter updates!

  • badgerboy

Rick is a doofus. But it is obvious that he meant no racial connection in what he said. People make innocent word choice mistakes all the time. In our political climate, others like to create issues when there are none. This will get a scant mention on a site like this one, but if Hannity or O’Reilly said it (even if they followed up with an “oops, my bad” addendum) I’m wondering how pervasive the clip would be in the liberal blogosphere right now?

  • am_underground

Shame on Sanchez for apologizing. As a Mexican he knows good and well how many of his race picked cotton. I’m 62 and grew up in Texas, lots of cotton here, and I never heard “Cotton Picking” used as a racial slur. Just another word game played by liberals and the black community to try and save the Dems behinds. You people need to get a life and report the news, not try and invent it. WTF is happening in this country.

  • CAconservative

Rick Sanchez is bound and determined to prove Glen Beck right!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Peter-Engel/752199074 Peter Engel

The only thing that shocks me is agreeing with gordonbloyer.

  • Karol

Cotton pickin’ is a phrase used frequently in friendly conversation, particularly by Southerners and Midwesterners and has nothing to do with race and is not a racial slur.

However, Sanchez should know better than to use it on the air, particularly in reference to the president. Sanchez does not belong on the air. This must be number 10,000 of the inappropriate things he has said this year.
He needs to go. Maybe he could work behind the scenes but he is a disgrace on the air.

Amen to that, I personally dont like the guy, but this is where we have come to in America, so many people in line to become victims. Maybe its just where you come from, but growing up, I cant tell you how many times I heard the comment, ” Just wait a cotton picking minuet” Or, ” That cotton picking Jones boy did this or that”, It was used like I would use That DANG dog tore up my paper again.

What a sniviling small country we are becoming.

Gee, Gordon, maybe you should apply for the open slot. If CNN hired one reactionary blowhard (Beck), they might hire another one.
