Scott Brown’s 2008 Birther Rhetoric: Obama Born Out Of Wedlock?

video

Could this be a Sunday Surprise — that is, a new and salacious media narrative only days before the contentious Massachusetts election? Sure, nudie pics didn’t derail the Scott Brown campaign, but a clip of the would-be Senator making the rounds on the blogs this weekend shows him wondering if Barack Obama might have been born out of wedlock. It’s problematic because the infamous so-called “birther” movement believes the same thing.

While questioning Obama’s mother for giving birth at the age of 18, Brown’s counterpart interjects that Obama’s mother was married, before Brown responds, “Well, I don’t know about that.”

Blue Mass Group shared the clip, which has been subsequently picked up by Talking Points Memo, the Washington Independent and has bubbled a bit on Digg.

A Brown spokesperson told TPM that the quote was a “non-issue,” and that may prove to be the case, but 48 hours is an eternity in internet time, so rest assured: the liberal blogosphere will squeeze all they can out of this admittedly awkward and unfortunate gaffe.

Here’s the clip:

I thought the signature informing agent of the Birthers was that Obama wasn’t born in Hawaii? Brown doesn’t say that, so I think to title this article “Scott’s Brown 2008 Birther Rhetoric” is a tad disingenuous.

I’m really not sure of the media angle here, but…

It’s an off-year, off-date election. The winner will be determined by whichever candidate gets more of their supporters to the polls and I don’t see how a verbal gaffe will motivate anybody “anti”.

While you know, though his expression of ignorance seems innocent enough, if the liberal bloggers wanted to wrap this in some kind of birther cloth, it could have an opposite effect.

A supposed Scott Brown gaffe makes mediaite, yet the numerous Coakley gaffes don’t? LOL
    YUP – mediaite=msnbc

    Read on Instapundit:

Barney Frank said: “Obama is not Coakley dressed in drag”
Reader reply: “With all the gaffes that she has made, I’m starting to think that Martha Coakley is Joe Biden in drag.”

    HA!

WOW…a 12 second clip is what Joe is hangin his hat on? Methinks Joe needs a nap…or a new hat.

Perhaps he got the idea from Michelle Obama?
“Barack saw his mother, who was very young and very single when she had him, and he saw her work hard to complete her education and try to raise he and his sister.” ~ Michelle Obama

“His own mother, she said at the beginning of her remarks, was “very young and very single when she had him.” And, Obama added, he has observed his wife’s attempts to reconcile motherhood with her career aspirations.”

Or maybe he got it from Rev. Wright? “”Hillary doesn’t know what it feels like to be raised by a single poor white mother, Barack does!”

Perhaps Brown remembered Obama saying he was raised by a single mother, which he repeated quite often.

“I was raised by a single mother.”

Scott was discussing attacks against the Palins, and Bristol Palin, and brought up that Obama’s mother was young too. The blogs only provided the :15 clip, thus leaving off the context of the discussion. Surprise.
You can see the longer clip here.

Obama, himself, hints that his father and mother’s wedding may not have been properly documented. “How and when the marriage occurred remains a bit murky, a bill of particulars that I have never quite had the courage to explore. There’s no record of a real wedding, a cake, a ring, a giving away of the bride. No families were in attendance; it’s not even clear that people back in Kansas were informed.” Obama writes in his memoir.

TPM states (although, does seem to be a bit of a contradiction to Obama’s book):

“Now the factual record on this is clear. Obama’s parents were married February, 1961, and Obama was born in early August of the same year. So his mother was certainly married when he was born.”

This appears to have everything to do with the discussion Brown was having in the video, Obama’s mother was single when she got pregnant, just like Bristol Palin.

The only issue this brings up is the desperation by some to try to turn this into a smear by posting a mere snipit of the conversation.

    Yes,

This will be the reason Brown loses. Mothers that gave birth while unmarried will change their loyalties to Coakley.

Those mothers changing votes will outnumber the hospital workers wishing to express religious freedoms that last week submited their resignations to their hospital employers.

Oh, and outnumber the MA Yankees fans that learned this week that Curt Schilling is actually a Redsox fan.

Yes, a definite 5 point swing.

  • MartiniShark MartiniShark says:

So with all the Coakley humor that is available this is what this site came up with for this election?. Hell, for all the heat Palin receives for being an intellectual lightweight you would think Coakley mispelling the name of her home state in a campaign ad would have deserved some attention.

  • TfT TfT says:

Martini: Not to mention her “there are no terrorists in Afghanistan”

    Sign seen at Brown rally:

“For the first time in my life, I’m proud of my State”.

  • Chuck Steele says:

Actually, it is going to come out later this year that Obama was never born at all. He was, in fact, conceived in a test tube in a lab, secretly funded by Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi, with a little “input” by Barney Frank. All of his thoughts and actions are controlled in the basement of the New Endicott Building by the mad scientist’ Dobbie Gillis and Maynard G krebbs.
He never attended college, as well.

  • David Harper says:

Sarainitaly, you seem to gloss over the most important part of his life story. For the vast majority of his young life, Obama was raised by his mother only and his grandparents. Just because she had a marriage certificate does not mean she was not alone.

Rahm Emanuel On 60 Minutes: “Fringe Group Has Taken Control” Of GOP

White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel was recently interviewed by CBS' Katie Couric for tomorrow night's episode of 60 Minutes, a short clip of which has been released online. Obama’s Final Push On Health Care To Democratic Caucus On Capitol Hill

    video

President Barack Obama spoke in the conference hall of the Capitol today about the health care reform bill which is coming close to meeting enough votes to pass in the House of Representatives, which earlier today decided not use the "deem and pass" strategy to railroad the bill through Congress. "I know this is a tough vote for some of you," said our president, adding "Don't do it for Nancy Pelosi, or Harry Reid, or me. Do It for the American People." Pay attention folks, this speech is definitely one for the history books.
