Being gay and having to come out is a very unique experience.

And generally speaking, most homosexuals don’t choose to be gay, but it is not genetic, it is usually the result of abuse of some sort (i.e. Michael Jackson abused as a child, grows up to be gay). It’s just the sad cycle of the world. I knew someone in high school, a guy who secretly liked another guy, so he’d always try to get beaten up by the guy because he enjoyed it.

Male homosexuality is generally a symbiotic abuse-abused relationship where one person takes out anger on another and another has learned to “love hate” (for example if the only love they got from their father was abuse they are more likely to interpret abuse as love).

Watching this video, it appears that the father is unimpressed or knew all along that his son was gay. As a father of 4, If my son told me that he was gay, I think my first reaction would be to freeze up and think that I had just lost my son. As this soldier was growing up there must have been signs at least curiousity about his behavior. Obviously, if he was gay, he must not have shown any interest in girls, as a father, I would think that would be at least curious given the fact that teenage boys at that age will be chasing everything that wears a skirt. I just don’t see how this kid having been engaged in family life at home everyday, how the family saw no signs or were not a bit curious about him, unless, it was one of those dysunctional families where the parents are totally disengaged with the kids and visa versa.  

That wasn’t “amazing” at all. You can’t have an amazing video where you can’t even hear half of what one person in the conversation is saying. Are you telling me with all the friends he has in the army he couldn’t find one with decent skills in making a video? I’m pro gays in the military and in favor of the repeal.  However, this video was not worthy of posting.  It was nothing more than stilted and boring navel gazing.

I think it’s safe to say that if the kid has reached his 20s, his parents probably did suspect at least a little bit.

There’s only so long one can keep something as big as that a secret before it becomes obvious that there’s something you’re not saying.

Think about the reality of the son’s experience:  the son probably had to invent stories about why he didn’t have any girlfriends (or he had to pretend that he had one)….or had to be deliberately vague about where he was going or who he was hanging out with.

It’s not unusual for teens and young adults not to tell their parents everything…but at some point it’s a hard secret to keep.

I’m thankful that a) if the parents DID suspect, they gave him space and time to come to terms with it and B) they listened to him and loved him anyway.

Just for the record, gay men don’t like all other men just like straight men don’t like all women. It’s a bit silly to assume that a guy is going to find you attractive enough to look at simply because he’s gay. I’m a bisexual guy and I only find a relatively small percentage of men attractive. I also tend to NOT look at other guys in the showers. I wouldn’t really want them checking me out (hot or not), so why would I invade their privacy?

Also, I have to tell you, in response to one of you’re later comments, I’m damn good with a gun. I’m not military simply because I’m attending college at the moment and decided that my path was enforcing the law in courts rather than on a battle field.

I’m not so sure “preferential” is what I’m looking for. I don’t see what’s preferential about wanting to marry who I want to marry and to not be excluded from a job I love simply because of my sexual orientation. I also don’t know what’s wrong with my not wanting to be a victim of a hate crime. 

Would you want to be forbidden any of those things? Probably not.

I don’t think that solves anything, and I don’t know anything about you so I can’t make that judgement.
