‘Come On!’ Bill O’Reilly Blasts GOP Congressman During Epic Gun Control Segment

Bill O’Reilly continued criticizing liberals for trying to politicize the Colorado shootings to push for more gun control, but during his interview with Republican congressman Jason Chaffetz, O’Reilly got fired up telling the congressman that there need to be more restrictions on the books that prevent people from buying heavy weapons without the FBI knowing about it.

O’Reilly said that Congress should pass a law requiring anyone who sells heavy weapons to report said sale to the FBI. Chaffetz said that the FBI should not be given a “master list” of every gun owner in the country, but O’Reilly interrupted Chaffetz to say that he was misrepresenting what he said. O’Reilly said that if you go to flight school, the FBI knows about it, but not if you purchase a machine gun. Chaffetz said O’Reilly’s assertion was “absolutely not true.”

Chaffetz said that anyone who buys heavy weapons has to get a tax certificate from the ATF and pass a background check. O’Reilly countered by pointing out the gun show loophole in the law, to which Chaffetz responded, “You can’t just buy a bazooka.” O’Reilly argued that the Colorado shooter proved that anyone can purchase thousands of bullets and no federal agency knows about it. He made the case that the FBI could cross-reference anyone purchasing automatic weapons or thousands of bullets with, for example, the no-fly list or terrorist watch list.

O’Reilly told Chaffetz, “This makes common sense!” Chaffetz objected, arguing that the laws on the books are tough enough. O’Reilly disputed this, ripping into the congressman for his opposition for what he thought was a reasonable proposal.

“If the FBI is alerted that somebody is buying 60,000 heavy-duty rounds, they’re going to check it out, because that’s what anti-terrorism is! That’s what they do!… You’re telling me you object to this? This doesn’t intrude on any hunter, anybody with a handgun to protect themself, anybody with a rifle, this is an AK! Come on!”

Chaffetz and O’Reilly continued to fight over whether any laws on the books currently exist require reporting the sale of heavy weapons in the first place. O’Reilly made it clear that he wouldn’t want anyone to ban any heavy weapons, but he was insistent on having them reported.
