CBS News’ Emotional Look Back At Afghanistan
The CBS Evening News closed the show last night with a moving package featuring CBS News reporters and producers, sharing their remembrances of covering the war in Afghanistan. Yesterday marked the eight year anniversary of the battle overseas.
Pairing comments from the CBSers in front of a stark black backdrop with images and video of the war provided a touching and powerful tribute.
Byron Pitts, Lara Logan, Scott Pelley, Cami McCormick, Mary Walsh, and producers Henry Schuster, Tom Anderson and David Martin were featured in the six-minute video.
Logan, who was on CBS’ The Early Show yesterday talking about Afghanistan, described the time when “the soldier next to me lost his leg.” “I remember thinking ‘Oh my God, they’re going to leave me here to die because they think I’m already dead,’” she said.
Other comments included Schuster remembering a Sergeant’s roll call of dead soldiers names, when “The silence is overwhelming,” and Martin declaring bluntly, “This country is medieval.”
The video is emotional, jarring and at times very tough to watch – but an important segment you’re unlikely to find on a cable news program:
