Conan O’Brien Officiates A Same-Sex Wedding On Live TV

Video

Conan O’Brien is back in New York City for a spell, affording him the opportunity to officiate a wedding between his longtime costume designer, Scott Cronick, and Cronick’s boyfriend David Gorshein at the lovely Beacon Theatre.

Scott was walked down the aisle by Bravo host Andy Cohen, to a song I couldn’t quite hear over his jacket.

The couple, joined by their friends and family, recited their own vows under a very autumnal orange and gold floral chuppah that perfectly complimented Conan’s hair.

Some are suggesting that this is the first same-sex wedding performed on television. But I — keeping track of all things TV, gay, and wedding industrial complex-related — can think of at least one other, performed in Brazil back in 2008.

Either way: Congratulations to the happy couple! And to Conan, for becoming a part of late-night TV history.

This is the best news I have read…all week! Congrats to the happy couple!

  • Concerned Citizen

This is the dilemma, this is America where you are free to do what you want. I don’t care that these two want to be a couple but I am sick of the gay agenda being pushed down our throats at every turn. Does every TV show have to have a gay character? Again I don’t care what consenting adults do behind closed doors but you will never get me to think its normal that one man craves another mans love and penis. Its just friggin gross and abnormal in my book.

  • Anonymous

I’ve never been a fan of “TeeVee” type relationships or marriage. But this was pretty cool.

  • Concerned Citizen

Yeah still don’t understand how a heterosexual male want to be involved in this and say its so cool that its happening. I cringe when I see two guys kissing and think about what else they want to do to each other. Yuck.

  • SConservative

It looks like Conan wants a ratings boost.

  • Rusty

That is the gay agenda, to marry the person you love and be happy and equal to your peers. Pretty threatening right?

  • Very Concerned Citizen

I know right? Gay people don’t exist in real life, so why do they have fictional characters representing them on TV? So ridiculous.

  • http://twitter.com/JCP1975 JCP1975

Yeah, but I cringe when I see a fat person and think about all the damage they’ve done and will continue to do their body. But, it’s their life and if eating enormous amounts of junk food and not exercising makes them happy – then so be it. Who am I to stop them?

    Congrats to the new couple!

I wander if Conan is aware of his own inconsistencies in being an LGBT supporter and a  believer in evolution...

I doubt he has considered this:

Natural Selection – at it’s most basic explanation – is the idea that traits that cause a species to thrive, or survive, are naturally selected to continue to evolve or continue to exist. The traits that threaten or diminish the existence of a species are naturally selected to be discarded.

LGBT “Trait”- The current argument is that LGBT are “born this way”. (i’m not sure they realize the folly of such an argument if widely accepted)

Homosexuals are born with a trait that causes them to have sexual relations with the same sex of their species, eliminating the process of natural reproduction within their sub-sect of the species. Natural Selection works to take traits (say, a sexual orientation that eliminates reproduction by those with that trait) that threaten a species existence, or reproduction, and eliminate them.

How can you say your support the growth of a “trait” within our species that your own paradigm suggests is a mutation or threat to continued existence? If the trait became so pervasive that it was in a majority of our species – it threatens our existence – according to natural selection it must be eliminated.

I realize the less articulate will probably just reply “bagger”, “homophobe”, etc… but could someone with more intellect than that please reply. It’s a serious consideration

  • Anonymous

Probably…. I’ve heard he’s been losing viewers steadily since his launch on TBS.

  • http://mediamatters.org/ Leedog

When you said “fat person”, were you referring to Chris Christie or Rush Limbaugh??

  • Ralph

    Excellent!

Soon getting a wedding license will be as mundane as a building permit or a wedding license.  The more done to remove the religious content from civil marriage, the better.

  • http://mediamatters.org/ Leedog

The “trait” you’re talking about represents a small percentage of the population and have no evidence it will grow to end the existence of human beings!!

I would imagine Homosexuals have been around since the beginning of mankind, yet the population continues to grow… to an astonishing 7 billion and counting!!

  • Anonymous

I’m glad this took place in a forum that brings publicity while preserving legitimacy.

Here’s for the day whe a same sex marriage won’t be a big enough deal for anybody to do it on TV.

  • Swing Low

I think he would like to  ” f*ck the stupid out of ” either of them . Perhaps,  Conan . Or, maybe one, or both members of the happy couple .

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

  • Anonymous

That disgusting gay agenda: have the right to marry the person you’re committed to and have the right to serve the country without fear of expulsion. It’s just plain un-American.

  • Anonymous

Actually, when you look at the divorce rate (1 in 2 marriages), maybe making a wedding license MORE difficult to get might make sense. But I salute your basic point.

  • Big Taters

I do have evidence that the trait will grow. The human race is actively advocating it’s growth. It’s advocating on a larger scale than ever in history.

After billions of years, the last 50 have seen a level of communication and advocacy on the subject never before seen on the planet. The “trait” is being addressed, accepted and studied more than ever in human history. It will take centuries to know the full impact on humanity and its experiment in to widely accepting, normalizing and even promoting such ‘mutations’ from the natural selection process. To suggest otherwise is not even intellectually dishonest, it’s just goofy.

Suggesting there should be evidence is just a short sided understanding of history and how the process of natural selection works.

It will take centuries to begin to see the effects of our current decisions on this.

At the core of human understanding, aside from what we build into our minds with education and social engineering – we understand the basic reason why some humans have vaginas and some have penises. Everything outside of what naturally makes sense, it’s just bored curiosity and exploration. Humans are getting bored.

  • Big Taters

I agree. It makes me sick to my stomach to listen to Michael Moore try and lecture me about the state of health care.

FAT PEOPLE cost us 148,000,000,000 Dollars in 2008 healthcare related cost.

But, back to the original post – yeah, two guys kissing is just silly.

  • Jessica

Even if promoted, it can only grow if the gay men take wives. Hence, it won’t grow. Then again… maybe they’ll do something weird like donate to sperm banks.

  • Anonymous

    You are a homophobic jerk.

  • Ralph

Much of the rhetorical energy of liberal groups comes from the presupposition that people with traditional values wrongly control government.  It therefore benefits moderates and conservatives to cut loose of a failing society and allow things like civil marriage licenses to hold no value except in their legal and economic content.

Any legal or economic benefit that marriage confers to its participants is wrongly discriminatory against unmarried people.  For that reason, LGBTs aren’t like Civil Rights legend Rosa Parks who wanted to end white-only segreation.  They just want permission to sit in the front of the bus.  Worse things have happened, but LGBT advocates aren’t the modern Civil Rights activists (unless “modern” connotes something defective in itself).

  • Anonymous

You still are a homophobic jerk.

  • Jessica

I agree that civil unions should be separate from religious marriage ceremonies. Civil unions should be allowed to anyone in the state who wants one. People’s ceremonies shouldn’t need to be made official by the government. Anyone should feel free to practice freedom of religion.. and not feel like they’re obligated to have it made official by the government in order for it to mean anything.. Religious or non-religious ceremonies and vows are a private matter and should be considered as such.

  • Rick Patel

Just when you thought TV couldn’t get more repulsive and insulting. Conan has always been a bottom-feeding sleazer.

  • http://twitter.com/JCP1975 JCP1975

Nope, just want to “F*ck the stupid out of Sarah”.

BTW, was that your attempt at taking a swipe at me?  If so, very minor league of you.

  • http://twitter.com/JCP1975 JCP1975

    Hey Rick Patel,

You think watching two gay men on TV is repulsive?

Want to hear something even more repulsive that I saw on TV?  I was watching a Republican debate where a gay soldier asked the Republican contenders a question regarding the repeal of DADT.  And after he finished asking the question, Republican audience members started booing the gay soldier. Yep, they booed him strictly because he was gay.

Imagine that, a bunch of homophobic chickenhawks booing a man who has chosen to serve his country and protect its citizens freedoms, including theirs.

The Republicans truly have no souls.

Lighten up. Now that we’ve just passed seven billion residents of planet Earth — and will likely add another billion in about a decade — it wouldn’t hurt for civilization to have a little LESS procreative sex.

  • Anonymous

    Totally.

  • Norbit

    Or the subtitle:

Conan Obrien, In Search of an Audience!

I haven’t watched last night’s show yet, but I knew he was going to do this a couple weeks ago..  I think it’s great and can’t wait to see it.  His entire week he went back to NY for his shows, they’ve been pretty great,, funny segments.. he did good!

  • Anonymous

are you suffering from small penis syndrome ?

  • Norbit

They boo’d the policy – but you, your President, and YOUR MEDIA continue to deliberately and calculatingly spew the canard that they boo’d the soldier.

And I and others will continue to EXPOSE your LIE!

  • Anonymous

unless they’re famous.. . like Tiny Tim did on Johnny Carson!

^^^ wasn’t gay of course cuz he married Miss Vicki if i recall.. but still, was referring to a real wedding on late night tv.

  • Anonymous

to clarify .. the religious places like churches in ny were not ordered to marry gays if it’s against their beliefs..   only problems they’ve had so far is some small towns where people refused to help gays get their marriage licenses.. they hopefully were fired as they work in a gov setting and have to abide by the law.

  • Randy

I cringe when I see guys kissing too, but I do not see how the relationships of consenting adults are any of the government’s business.

  • Threputt

I’d give Conan credit for being true to his beliefs, but not sure it’s a smart play. He certainly offended a portion of his audience, and with his ratings sinking, he needs all the viewers he can get. But it seems like he’s been moving more and more to the left in his monologues, so the potentially offended have probably already left. Which may account for some of his sinking ratings.

and allow things like civil marriage licenses to hold no value except in their legal and economic content

They already have no more value than what the 2 people involved declare them to mean, aside, from obviously yes the economic and legal content.   It’s up to the 2 individuals to make the relevance affect their daily lives.

Where do we throw Kim Kardashian into this conversation.

The value of marriage has always been only as real as the 2 people choose it to be, but the legal status of it stays relevant by law.

  • Anonymous

    You don’t wander you wonder

…but then again, you probably do wander  around parks.. malls.. a lot.

  • http://twitter.com/JCP1975 JCP1975

Why would they boo the policy?  It’s not like the law would affect Republicans. I mean, you’d actually have to be in, or want to pursue a career in the military for the law to affect you. And considering the Republican Party is full of chickenhawks, the policy is null to their lives.

So yes, they boo’d the gay soldier.

And if you don’t like my media, don’t watch it. And more importantly, if you don’t like this website, why are you here?  All day long you bitch and moan about this place but yet you still never fail to show up.

    Logic fail.

Kardashian can be placed anywhere you choose.

I don’t quite get the point though.  It’s your belief that heterosexuals who act with irresponsibility somehow make the case that those who advocate against same-sex marriage are wrong?  I’d expect the conservatives who advocate against same sex marriage to also advocate against divorce and against whimsical marriages too.

Most of what we see in this story is contradictory what LGBTs say they want.  Conan is officiating like a religious leader at a marriage, and in so doing LGBTs are asserting that marriage is essentially a religious institution.  Sure, ships captains, justices of the peace, and I guess talk show hosts can officiate at weddings, but they are only stand-ins for religious leaders.

Why not just scrap the vows and file for a marriage license like a person gets a driver’s license, or a building permit, or a business license?  Somehow, LGBTs want to keep the religious ceremony, and keep marriage a religious institution while condemning religious values.  They’re not just same-sex attracted.  They’re downright queer.

Two homos who will probably get divorced in 2 years, ergo, cancelled like Conan will be.

  • Anonymous

Even if the simpleminded Norbit could prove that they were booing “the policy,” they were still in effect booing that soldier. Because if they were willing to keep DADT alive, they were basically saying that they think this guy isn’t fit to serve. So what’s really the difference?

  • Anonymous

It’s extremely unlikely that Conan’s audience is much put off by a same sex wedding. His audience skews very young and approval of marriage equality is extremely high in that demographic.

  • News Of The World

Bravo, Conan!  And congrats to the newlyweds!

  • Tony

Tell me about it. The other thing that really makes me mad too is the straight people pushing their agenda down our throats! I mean have you seen all these Bachelor – shows on TV?? And TV shows like Jon & Kate + 8? Or “Newlyweds, Nick and Jessica”? How dare they push their heterosexual agenda down our throats! Does every TV show have to have a straight character??

I don’t care what they do behind closed doors but you will never get me to think it’s normal to your penis into someone’s vagina!! It’s just friggin gross and abnormal in my book.

  • cleandick

HEY FUDGE PACKERS.  It’s an exit, not an entrance.  The mere thought of dipping my wick where shit comes out is sickening.

  • Rusty

These are the same party members who chanted “Let him die” when presented with the theoretical case of someone who needed life saving measures but didn’t have means to pay.
