Jon Stewart Blasts Arizona As ‘The Meth Lab Of Democracy’

video

Having fully reassumed his position as the most respected voice on the American left last week, Jon Stewart continued his attack with some sharp commentary on Arizona’s new illegal immigration bill, calling Arizona the “meth lab of democracy” and pointing out that, if vocal illegal immigration opponent Tom Tancredo thinks the new immigration law is too strict, maybe the state should consider a different approach.

Stewart went down the list of major concerns with the bill, especially lingering on the fact that police now have the authority to question individuals who they deem “look” illegal and request identification, and that individuals are allowed to sue the police if they consider that law enforcement is not doing enough to keep illegal immigrants out of Arizona (what Stewart called “police neutrality”). He also observed that if Tancredo, “the guy Mexican parents tell their kids about to get them to eat their vegetables,” was concerned about civil rights violations, then there might just be something wrong with the bill.

He also brought along “senior immigration correspondent” Wyatt Cenac to discuss the bill, though he was inconveniently interrupted in his report by a police officer who thought he looked kind of illegal.

I don’t know much about meth labs, and will need to defer to Mr. Stewart’s expertise in this area.

Frances, Mr. Stewart called. He wants you to pickup his dry cleaning, wash his car and give him a tongue bath.

Oh, never mind. This piece will do just fine.

This site is a hoot sometimes, it really is.

Watching Laura Ingram in for Bill O’Reilly tonight, she (and I think it was the legal analysts) brought up some interesting points regarding the legislation. They said it was rather carefully crafted, but (more importantly) designed so that the police couldn’t simply stop someone for “looking out of place,” they had to stopped them for another reason prior to asking for identification. In other words, no police officers will be walking the streets saying, “Hey you!” But if you run a stop sign, while giving you a ticket, the officers might ask for proof of residence.

Furthermore, they also pointed out that folks who are here legally, but from another country, are required by law to carry ID on them at all times. If you have a green card, apparently, you’re supposed to keep that with you… so an officer asking to “see your papers,” is something you should already be in possession of. Yet again, it’s not extra enforcement of the laws, it’s just enforcement of the already standing laws.

BUT, since half the people on this site just had their eyes gloss over when reading the above… I’ll ask the easy question and move along: If not this bit of legislation, what should Arizona do to curb the violence, drug trafficking, and smuggling that is plaguing their state now? What would be a more appropriate action?

Maybe hold President Obama accountable for his promise to do something about immigration during his first year in office? Just a thought…

Holding Obama accountable?! Well, clearly you’re just a racist…

The comedian, clearly, hasn’t read the law.

Stewart looks very illegal to me.

I saw that segment but since Laura (who’s terrible btw) supports the law, she did not play devil’s advocate like O’reilly normally does. For example, in the case above, what would give the officer REASONABLE SUSPICION to ask the driver for proof of residence? Isn’t it plausible that they will ask HISPANICS that question more than they would ask a white guy? The “reasonable suspicion” in this case would be race or national origin. Can’t you see the issue there? Furthermore, cops could find any bullshit PC reason to pull you over if you were hispanic for the sole purpose of inquiring your immigration status. How do you think blacks get profiled? Ever heard of ‘driving while black?’ Statistics prove this! It’s quite telling how naive some of you are not to see how LEOs can abuse this law to infringe citizen’s rights. Not only that, due to threat of lawsuits for not enforcing the law, they will be incentivized to profile even more to cover their butts.

I shouldn’t do that, Felix when you have at your call a woman with far greater expertise, the Drop Out Governor of Alaska whose state and hometown are the Meth Lab Capital of Amerika.

Indeed that makes me feel much, much better. Ingraham. Much, much better. What a shame Lou Dobbs wasn’t available.

It’s too bad that in his brief recap of recent Arizona laws, he missed that earlier this month, they joined a handful of other states in testing the Federal authority to regulate guns.

  • MichelleF

Jon’s just another ignorant lib, who has no idea all the AZ law says is it will enforce EXISTING FEDERAL LAW!. The Daily Kos really should update their talking points for these clowns so they don’t look so stupid.

  • Grammie

Is profiling per se wrong and/or illegal?

I don’t think it is. Both as individuals and institutions we all use profiling every day to navigate life. So the question, to me, is will the profiling be based on a reasonable statistical and/or situational basis that removes the taint of prejudice in its improper sense.

Is there a probability that there will be some of that? Absolutely! Is that a legitimate reason to automatically scrap the entire law before it even starts? Not to me b/c virtually every law, rule and custom can be and probably is abused!

I actually agree. Not a Laura fan.

For example, in the case above, what would give the officer REASONABLE SUSPICION to ask the driver for proof of residence? Isn’t it plausible that they will ask HISPANICS that question more than they would ask a white guy?

Perhaps. Of course, the converse of this situation (the “we’ll do it to everyone” play) is the same thing folks complain about at the airports. Is there any need to screen the 80 year-old grandmother? It’s called common sense.

The “reasonable suspicion” in this case would be race or national origin. Can’t you see the issue there?

Absolutely! And I’m not saying I’m a fan of this legislation. I am saying, however, that it’s: (a) understandable, with the Feds not willing to do anything… and the left complaining, but offering no alternatives; and (b) not the “horror” that some have falsely portrayed it as.

Furthermore, cops could find any bullshit PC reason to pull you over if you were hispanic for the sole purpose of inquiring your immigration status. How do you think blacks get profiled? Ever heard of ‘driving while black?’ Statistics prove this!

Yeah… I’m not sure those stats are to be trusted. I remember quite a few of those “studies” coming from unreliable sources, and being debunked soon after. And if the feel their rights have been violated, and being that this provision is already in the law, they could always sue. I’m sure there are plenty of ACLU lawyers ready to make the case!

It’s quite telling how naive some of you are not to see how LEOs can abuse this law to infringe citizen’s rights. Not only that, due to threat of lawsuits for not enforcing the law, they will be incentivized to profile even more to cover their butts.

    Well… what’s a better alternaive?

I know, I know… reporting the ACTUAL FACTS is annoying, when you’re intent on fabricating your own.

Of course, you’ve once again proven yourself a fraud. Remember when you said a while back that you don’t like nastiness on either side, and would thusly call it out. Then you claimed you had never heard or seen “Bovine.” Yet, in this case… “Bovine” has posted something AMAZINGLY offensive to a multitude of people BEFORE you posted!

    And yet… nothing. Again… you’re a fraud.

TRRK had the unmitigated gall to lie that blatantly about “Bovine”.

Both he AND that piece of GlenBovine trash made a game for months on end of constantly harassing a commenter named Royal King (clever of TRRK) with the most repulsive accusations of bestiality hence their endearing term Bovine for him.

Of course, he alternated that with describing Cecelia and I as fag hags, drunken Nazi sluts, senile drunken whores all interspersed with his pious “All the Marys in heaven” and recounting of his sublime pleasures in the season of Advent and his declaration of his saying Novenas for someone as vile, nasty and mean as I.

TRRK is a real piece of work. I’ll give him this over GlenBovineKolys, though, he can under absolute necessity reign his true nature in enough to not get banned here permanently.

Just keep sending “Bovine’s” comments to their “tips” link.

Eventually, Mediaite will get the message.
