Katie Couric Admits She Was Nervous In Egypt, Still Plans To Report From Danger Zones

Yesterday CBS’ Katie Couric called into Reliable Sources to discuss the dangers that journalists were facing in Egypt and to share some of her own frightening moments. Couric described the scene as a “turbo-charged street fair” and admitted a scare when the supporters of Egyptian President Mubarak began demonstrating great animosity towards the press and towards America.

Couric described the ordeal:

“I was a little nervous. But at first, I just thought it was a boisterous crowd. You know, when you have a television camera, it sometimes attracts some pretty crazy behavior . . . and when I got surrounded, and this one sort of young Egyptian man pushed me, I thought, I looked at his eyes, and they were so full of rage.”

Host Howard Kurtz wondered whether American anchors should stop going into danger zones since they attract so much attention, “perhaps they become targets and distract from the story?” However, Couric disagreed and smartly recognized the fact that many journalists who were not anchors ended up in far greater danger and that no one on the streets of Egypt even recognized her as anything more than an American journalist. Instead, Couric believed anchors can bring a wealth of an experience when reporting “on the ground,” and thus did not seem eager to stop reporting from abroad in the future.

How long was Katie in Cairo? 24 hours?

lol, this is funny? According to you, she still plans to report from danger zones, even though she was nervous about the incidents in Cairo (Egypt).

I’ve got news for you and her, what happened in Cairo is a protest, was barely a riot, danger zone it isn’t. Reporting in the middle of a gun fight, or bombing raining down where you are, or a tornado/tsunami rushing towards you, threat is a danger zone.

I have to agree with you there. Cronkite in Vietnam was a danger zone… WWII reports were in a danger zone. These reports have perfect hair and makeup… end of story.

Several journalists and cameramen were seriously hurt, at least one got stabbed, another was shot and killed.

I guess that’s not dangerous enough for you sitting at home making stupid comments?

Is that better or worse than being a “commanist”? A “librul”? A RINO? Please rank degree of “badness” on a scale of 1-5, with 1 being a Little Debbie Oatmeal Cream Cake and 5 being a generic bologna and American cheese with Miracle Whip on Wonder Bread sandwich.

If your compairing this to Vietnam and WWII I can’t help you.

I’m not doing any such thing, but you’re making fun of people being concerned about reporting from a location where their colleagues are getting killed.

My comment from another thread fits well here:

I find it amusing that “journalists” like Couric, who is no more a journalist than a grafitti artist is a novelist, scurry away at the first sign of a genuine threat and others put themselves in harm’s way for the sake of the story in the true tradition of journalism. People like Couric are genuine examples of that “journalistic narcissism”.

They dashed over there for the chance to get themselves on camera in front of a chanting crowd. But they proved the old addage – when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Going home, in their case.

Can’t stay there, can they? They might break a nail.

I strongly suspect that for the pampered Couric a danger zone os a hotel with no room service.

I’m no fan of Christiane Amahnpour but she has done some serious reporting from some very hairy places. The horror of of the Yugolsavian break-up comes to mind. She was under fire much of the time. Can anyone name me just one instance where Couric has done ANYTHING even remotely similar?

    If so, I’ll stand corrected.

In the meantime I’ll stick to my point that Couric is just studio candy.

Maybe old Katie can have a little compassion for Juan Williams. She felt “uncomfortable” in Egypt. Juan felt “nervous” when flying with Mid-easterners dressed in muslim garb. Déjà vu!

What? She didn’t want to experience another on camera colonoscopy? Even though, likely, of an entirely ~different~ kind?? Can’t blame her for that.

Especially considering that under Islamic Sharia law, she’d need at least four people, all men, who would be willing to testify in an open Islamic court, that the rape were forced and not consensual.

Otherwise she’d be open to being stoned to death, for making ~false~ rape allegations. Imagine that…

  • Nachi

She has long ago paid her dues. She ought not to be chancing over there. Enough already. Competition, I guess. Nuts!

  • X-3

Fear not, Couric shall ever remain in the rear with the gear.
