Krauthammer Warns GOP: Benghazi Committee ‘Very Dangerous Political Waters’

Charles Krauthammer offered words of warning to the GOP on Thursday evening, cautioning that the House Select Committee on Benghazi could prove to be a risky political move, potentially distracting from any gains the Republicans might have made on the administration during a midterm election year.

“I think [Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC)] is the right man for the job,” the columnist told Fox’s Megyn Kelly. “I think he understands people are assuming the mainstream media are propagating the myth that this is going to be some political circus, some political triumph for the Republicans.”

However, he cautioned that the hearings enter “very dangerous political waters.” His explanation:

If this is 2014, the winds are right behind the Republicans approaching the election on all the major issues: ObamaCare, the economy, chronic unemployment, setbacks abroad. All of this –- the issues are on the Republican side. Benghazi hearings can only distract from this at best and really wreck it at worst if they turn into a partisan circus.

Krauthammer added that organizing this committee is a “very high-risk operation” that needs to focus solely on understanding what, exactly, happened in the aftermath of the 2012 attacks on the U.S. consulate. If the committee deviates at all into a “political circus,” he reiterated, it will hurt the GOP.
