‘Over the Line’: CNN Panel Pans Trump Hard for Al Smith Dinner Speech

gergenImmediately after Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump‘s speeches at the Al Smith dinner tonight, CNN’s panel trashed Trump for not understanding where the line was.

Trump did some self-deprecating jokes (and his joke about Michelle Obama and his wife got one of the biggest laughs of the night), but he started getting a little too personal for many people with his zingers about how corrupt Clinton is and was booed multiple times.

David Gergen said he’s never heard someone get booed like that at the dinner before, saying that Trump “didn’t seem to know the difference between being lighthearted and heavy-handed.”

He said Trump had some “pretty tough jokes” about Clinton. Gergen said the idea is to “singe but never burn.”

Gloria Borger, meanwhile, said Trump “missed the self-deprecating part” and admitted she was uncomfortable at how Trump “couldn’t get away from the nastiness.”

Christine Quinn said that she too has never heard such boos. She was also struck by how much of a “full-throated attack” Trump engaged in at Clinton during his speech.
