A Whole Foods on the Upper West Side of Manhattan is receiving accusations of racism after the store put out a sale sign for “whole organic chicken” that featured a crude caricature of President Obama. The store removed the sign after neighbor Woody Henderson complained.
In an interview with NBC New York outside the location, Henderson said, “There are certain things that have been used to put down black people — watermelon, fried chicken.”
Other residents interviewed agreed that the ad was in poor taste, one saying “Even if he’s not the president, you’re going to have an African American promoting the sale of chicken? They can do better than that.”
Another man added, “I don’t think you can find a more pro-Democratic neighborhood. They’re sort of shooting themselves in the foot. It is pretty outrageous.”
Whole Foods responded by taking the ad down “once it was brought to our attention by a shopper that it may be perceived as offensive,” according to a statement. The spokesperson added, “There was no disrespect meant at all.”
The decision to post an ad for chicken featuring the president at this one New York location was likely made without input from CEO John Mackey, who has also found himself in hot water with liberals recently for his comments likening Obamacare to “fascism.”
