Scarborough: WaPo Wouldn’t Let Me Write in Column That Source Said Trump Has Dementia
Joe Scarborough said on MSNBC Monday morning that he tried to write in a Washington Post column that a source close to Donald Trump told him the president had early onset dementia — but that the paper axed the line.
During a Morning Joe interview with Michael Wolff — whose new book calls into question Trump’s mental fitness — Scarborough noted “for the past year, we’ve had people around Donald Trump saying he’s not fit to be president.”
Scarborough continued that there’s been a reluctance to confront questions of Trump’s mental state publicly — noting that while he’s “not knocking” the Washington Post, the paper has not let him write about the issue.
“I’ve written twice in my column a quote about one of — the people closest to Donald Trump during the campaign saying he’s got early stage dementia,” Scarborough said. “He repeats the same stories over and over again. His father had it. And it’s getting worse, and not a single person who works for him doesn’t know he has early signs of dementia.”
“But twice the Washington Post would not let me put that in my column. Which again, I salute them for having a high bar, but we’re at this moment.
“Aren’t we?” co-host Mika Brzezinski chimed in.
“Until your book came out,” Scarborough told Wolff, “this was something we were not allowed to speak about.”
