Who Gets Helen Thomas’ Prime White House Briefing Room Seat?

poll

With the news that Helen Thomas is officially retired, the question becomes: who gets her prime briefing room real estate?

Let’s put it to a poll!

Below, you can find a recent seating chart. But here are some options:

Jake Tapper, Chip Reid, Chuck Todd, Jennifer Loven: Currently in the front row already.

Major Garrett: Fox News’ correspondent, currently in the 2nd row.

Mark Knoller: Will seniority matter?

• Rotating – until a permanent replacement is named.

We asked our voice in the White House briefing room, Tommy Christopher (who asked Press Secretary Robert Gibbs the Thomas question today – and took the picture of her empty seat) for his take on the situation:

“I have a great deal of personal affection for Helen Thomas, and an admiration for her place in journalism’s history. I agree with Robert Gibbs that her comments were reprehensible, but it is my hope that they do not erase what has been a trailblazing career.”

Vote now!

    Jeff Gannon?

  • The Real Royal King

No, W is no longer president.

I’m thinking someone from FOX ought to be promoted, and the logical choice would be to make Major the Gretch’s sidekick and move the Douchey over to the White House. I understand he keeps a chair warm very well.

  • http://gordonbloyershow.com gordonbloyershow

The seat needs to be taken out and burned. Pour pig fat all over it. Someone should check her computer to see how many times she watched the Jewish reporter being beheaded.

  • felixw

Maybe Al Jazeera should get the choice seat — to be on hand for the various apologies and blame-America-first comments from the Oval Office.

  • http://gordonbloyershow.com gordonbloyershow

RRK you need to join Helen. You ignorant comments reflect hers.

  • The Real Royal King

That was actually clever Tyler. I had forgotten about the Male Prostitute welcomed into the Press Corps by W & Company.

  • ImNotBlue

I’d say whomever has the greatest audience size. Whether that’s FNC, or NYTimes, or whatever… it seems that’s the logical choice.

  • The Real Royal King

Actually, Felix, if you had ever watched Al Jazeera you might be impressed. Maybe a bit more biased than CNN, but much less biased than FOX. Some very good reporting. Even when I disagree, it gets me thinking.

  • The Real Royal King

That would be NBC or ABC, by far, depending on the week, INB. Cable news channels don’t garner the same size audience. By a long shot.

Hey, W was a supporter of gays, unlike homophobic libs.

  • writer

Aw, come on, King. You know you never disagree with Al Jazeera.

  • The Real Royal King

Supporting gays is one matter. Supporting male prostitutes is something altogether different. I don’t think you should be equating the two.

More to the point: The only reporting in this country that is close to neutral and bias free, the only media which is non-corporate, tends to be NPR or PBS (or some of the smaller organizations of a similar nature). I think a member of the media not beholding to a big corporation would be an excellent choice.

  • PureFreedom

It sounds like the best choice for this administration would be Al Jazeera, Obama can make cup cakes for them and they can report what ever the administration tells them too…as long as no Mohammad cartoons… otherwise someone will die!

Hey Barney ran a male prostitution ring out of his townhouse, king, so who are we to judge?

  • TylerDurden

Put KO in that seat so he doesn’t have to strain to brown-nose the admin.

  • The Real Royal King

If Franks is the standard, the standard is too low.

  • http://twitter.com/SailRabbits Magister

I assumed that because it was front-row, center, the next person with seniority would get it, but if Fox isn’t on the front row, it’d be wicked unfair or CBS to have two seats.

Now, if Chip wanted to switch with Major…

Oh, and hopefully this won’t get me banned, but TRRK, there were several comments about Gannon in yesterday’s big Helen post.

  • Puter Boi

    To get Helen Thomas’ seat….
I nominate….Noel Neil….she is the same age and has the experience…

True… but they’re already in the front row. Moving a chair or two over doesn’t seem like that much of a bump for them.

    You were joking , right?

NPR and PBS have been liberal mouthpieces for years!

As usual, the real racist king paints a different picture then exists. I can’t remember the last time I saw people with different political leanings debating an issue on Al Jazeera. But to the real racist king Al Jazeera’s reporting on Isreal is right down the alley of his journalistic idol, Helen Thomas. The real racist king would like to see 20 more, just like her!

So the real racist king must be appalled at Barney Frank supporting that male prostitute! So appalled that Barney supported the male prostitute while the male prostitute was running that “escort” service out of Barney’s apartment . Did you know him personally, racist?

  • sarainitaly

Move up Major! He is a stand up guy.

  • sarainitaly

this reminds me of my old working days, when ever someone left or was fired who had a sweet office, there was always a race to grab it…before it’s even cold. haha

  • Moderate

Pulitzer Prize winner Charles Krauthammer. Helen Thomas hates him.

  • The Real Royal King

Of course, Krauthammer is a columnist, not a reporter.

  • The Real Royal King

NPR and PBS have been liberal mouthpieces for years!

    —–

Perhaps, if you define liberal as mainstream, you might be correct.

I stand by my choices, but I do think FOX and MSNBC should be disqualified from holding this position.

  • http://twitter.com/SailRabbits Magister

    Oh, and I should’ve said it earlier…
Not to take anything away from @Tyler, either. It was a good joke.

BTW: A blogger for the WaPo says that Fox and Bloomberg have been lobbying for the seat. Though they aren’t being active today out of respect for Helen and Andrew Sullivan says it should go to a blogger, but no offense to Tommy, but I can’t think of any with enough cacheé, which just brings us back to a revolving.

Of course if opposition is the game, then Fox might qualify for this administration, but as the Post notes, it would be sort of an affront to Helen and I’ll add that they who oppose now wouldn’t necessarily be in the same position with the next White House.

Which maybe just brings us back to Bloomberg.
Again, unless Chip is willing to change with Major.

    Ha!

Only 20% describe themselves as libs, hardly the “mainstream.”

  • The Real Royal King

And, Tyler, I’m not the one who presented a syllogism suggesting they were. I doubt seriously any self-respecting liberal would want to be considered mainstream. We consider ourselves more the headwaters.

Major is the clear winner of the poll.

Who makes the decision as to who will get the seat and when will the decision be made?

  • http://trickletown.vox.com/ Trickletown

    I nominate Mel Gibson.

  • The Real Royal King

Trickletown! That’s cruel. Particularly since only a handful of people here understand that.

  • Moderate

    Major Garrett 50% WOW!

    Move CNN back with MSNBC.

Who makes the decision as to who will get the seat and when will the decision be made?

Well, if you’d been paying attention, you’d know that the WHCA assigns the seats in the Brady Briefing room. Their board is having a special meeting Thursday.

From the WHCA statement, signed by the entire board:
“While Helen has not been a member of the WHCA for many years, her special status in the briefing room has helped solidify her as the dean of the White House press corps so we feel the need to speak out strongly on this matter.

We want to emphasize that the role of the WHCA is to represent the White House press corps in its dealings with the White House on coverage-related issues. We do not police the speech of our members or colleagues. We are not involved at all in issuing White House credentials, that is the purview of the White House itself.

But the incident does revive the issue of whether it is appropriate for an opinion columnist to have a front row seat in the WH briefing room. That is an issue under the jurisdiction of this board. We are actively seeking input from our association members on this important matter, and we have scheduled a special meeting of the WHCA board on Thursday to decide on the seating issue.”

  • Moderate

Her absence will be felt “significantly” the burden will fall on the rest of the press corps to make sure the administration feels the need to be transparent about its plans to get us out of Iraq and Afghanistan.”

  • AngelPeters

Give it to the print pool journo of the day like that have been when she has been often absent.

  • silence_breaker

What Ms. Helen Thomas said was the absolute truth !! Yes indeed, Israel is occupying the Palestinian land and terrifying it’s people..for those who don’t agree with Ms Thomas, take some time and read some history.
I find Ms. Thomas very courageous, of course all these years doing what she does she’s ought to give her honest opinion. It seems like she’s sick and tired of the BS that’s been going on for ever!!
Hell with Injustice, hell with Israel.

  • TfT

Thanks vidiot. It will be interesting to see when they announce who gets the seat. I asked because the press corps is a different entity under Obama. They aren’t nearly as independent as they used to be, being Obama suck-ups and all that good stuff.

  • Rusty Shackelford

Give the seat to Ann Coulter! Could you imagine those questions?

  • Bunny

I think all the reporters from the second row to the last should put their names in a hat and each day draw for the empty seat (or have a one-time drawing for order and rotate the seat based on that).

Hopefully, they will soon allow another body into the press room (please, though, no more opinion columnists). It would be nice to see someone from a media outlet that has never had a seat in the press room to be granted access in filling the vacancy.

I’m sure a newbie wouldn’t get a prestigious front-row seat, so there would be some chair-shifting going on with newbie placed in the back row. I guess the reporter with the current longest tenure in the press room should be given the front-row seat.

I’m curious. If she’d said something just as reprehensible about blacks, would anyone commenting on her still start his remarks with a eulogy for her “illustrious career”? Thomas said what this room thinks, and that’s the truth.

  • jrcmi

“Hey, W was a supporter of gays, unlike homophobic libs.”

He may have “suppoorted” Gannon in more direct ways?

Homophobic libs? Good luck trying to spread THAT ridiculous talking point.

“the press corps is a different entity under Obama. They aren’t nearly as independent as they used to be, being Obama suck-ups”

They’re essentially the same bunch of “suck-ups” that covered Bush – minus Jeff Gannon, who took “sucking” literally. He may have been the hardest working person there at the time. “Hardest” may not be quite the best word but you get the, er, point.

You WANT to think they’re Obama-kissers, so don’t let facts spoil your delusions.

Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Neal Boortz, Chris Wallace are all good choices.
