‘He Made a Pretty Specific Stare at Me’: Maggie Haberman Confirms Trump ‘Glared’ at Her After Reporting He Fell Asleep in Court
CNN and New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman confirmed that Donald Trump stared her down hours earlier after she reported the former president fell asleep during his trial.
Jury selection in the case began on Monday. Trump is facing 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to conceal hush money payments he made to cover up extramarital affairs. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
“Trump appears to be sleeping. His head keeps dropping down and his mouth goes slack,” Haberman reported on day one of the trial. The reportage was apparently not lost on Trump, who “glared” at Haberman for “several seconds” as he left court.
The reporter appeared on that night’s edition of The Source on CNN.
“At one point, the pool said that he was glaring at you for several seconds,” host Kaitlan Collins noted. “You had reported shortly before that during a break that he appeared to be falling asleep at one point as the proceedings were getting kind of tedious. Did you notice that?”
“Mmhm,” Haberman replied. “Yes, I noticed. He made a pretty specific stare at me and walked out of the room.”
“I’ve been on the receiving end of said glares,” Collins said.
“I have too,” Haberman continued. “I reported earlier that he had appeared to fall asleep. Now, we had seen him– I want to be clear that I’ve seen lots of people fall asleep in courtrooms. I’ve seen jurors fall asleep. I’ve seen judges fall asleep. If anyone falls asleep who’s a criminal defendant in a case, we’re going to report on it. But he doesn’t like when such things are reported and I’m guessing – I don’t know – that that’s what this was about”
