“It’s Dead!” Trump Torched Rule of Law With Comey Charges, MSNBC’s Ari Melber Frets
President Donald Trump has slowly but consistently turned up the heat on his political opponents — to the point where the rule of law is now officially “dead” in the United States, following the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey, MSNBC’s Ari Melber argued on Saturday.
Melber, during the opening segment of The Beat: Weekend, skewered the president for going after Comey, whom Melber said “spoke truth to power” during Trump’s first term. Now, Trump is in the middle of a “very convoluted process” to take Comey down, according to Melber.
The MSNBC host compared the indictment of Comey, and Trump’s call for other political enemies to be charged, with the moment a frog has been boiled to death after the heat has been slowly turned up.
“We are past the red line,” Melber said. “That, if you use the analogy of the boiling frog, when it comes to the rule of law, the frog has been boiled, and it’s dead.”
The rule of law died, Melber said, after Comey was indicted by a grand jury on Thursday in the Eastern District of Virginia. Comey was indicted on one count of making false statements and one count of obstruction of justice tied to Senate testimony he gave in 2020.
Those charges came less than a week after the president urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to take “action” against Comey and other political rivals, like Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA).
Trump has ripped Comey and Schiff in the past for pushing what he called bogus claims he colluded with Russia to win the 2016 election. The president, in 2023, called Schiff a “sleazebag and traitor” who “should be prosecuted for the damage he has done” to the U.S. Trump has criticized Comey a number of times for leading what he has called the Russia “witch hunt” over the years.
The president, soon after Comey was indicted, celebrated the move.
“He has been so bad for our Country, for so long, and is now at the beginning of being held responsible for his crimes against our Nation,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
Melber, during his opening segment, made it clear he does not agree with the president that “justice” is being served by going after Comey.
“The escalation of Trump’s admitted plot to politicize and pursue possibly illegal revenge prosecutions and selective prosecutions is not normal and is rare, even if you put aside everything you’ve experienced in the Trump Era,” Melber said.
